About this deal

Pencil shavings are biodegradable, even though they decompose quite slowly; because they are usually made from cedarwood. Nonetheless, if you dispose of them in your waste bin, they are most likely going to end up in landfills. That is not exactly great for the environment. Thus, if you wish to recycle pencil shavings, it is best you do it by yourself. To begin, you would have to dedicate a bin or a substitute to collect your pencil shavings. Bellroy’s leather product section uses leather from tanneries who have received a Gold Rating from the Leather Working Group (LWG), meaning they’ve got a gold star in environmental practices (and labor too!). We want to make sure the materials are not only sustainable themselves, but that they’re ethically sourced and ethically manufactured, too. For an interesting take on recycled paper stationery, their Stone Paper Notebooks are crafted from recycled construction debris—specifically, recycled limestone.

The debate about whether pencils are more environmentally friendly than pens is quite the debate. Different logical points exist on both sides of the argument, and this would be pitted against each other to help you decide. From Hamburg, Germany, Sujittra loved coming up with “smart and functional designs” out of recycled natural materials like cork, kraft paper, wood, and leaves. Agood Company is just that, a good company in the way they are making a big difference in the lives of those living without clean drinking water, through Charity Water. With current efforts to embrace sustainable consumption including in the way we manage waste; we cannot overlook even such seemingly “micro” wastes like those from pencils. It takes one tree to make 170,000 pencils, meaning that it takes about 80,000 trees to meet the global annual demand for pencils. Talk about environmental impact! We love the looks of their sea & sky paint set, which includes a variety of non-toxic powdered pigments produced by the Society of Ochres, a centuries-old French company. Just add water, and your kiddo can create their masterpiece.

My personal preference here would be to buy a canvas bag as I prefer not to buy any plastic at all (when possible), but they aren’t always the best in a rainy UK. You can waterproof canvas yourself by waxing it, or you can compromise and go for a bag made from recycled materials. Hemp If you’re trying to be plastic free then there are a variety of stainless steel food containers or bento boxes available that would be perfect as lunch boxes. I’m not going to go into a huge amount of detail here, take a look at Eco-Friendly Food Containers, where I discuss eco-friendly food containers and lunch boxes in more detail.

MATERIALS:

Just be sure to have an eraser on hand so you don’t habitually try to erase with the seed capsule top! Pretty up your eco stationery, decorate the envelope of greeting cards, and more, all without worrying about your environmental impact.

The erasers themselves are usually made of either natural rubber or synthetic rubber. Natural rubber is biodegradable, but synthetic rubbers aren’t.

Source Materials: Most pens are made of polystyrene or similar plastics. About 70 tons of plastic are made into non-reusable pens every day. There are certain demerits of polystyrene: First, it is made from petroleum, one of the key pollutants of the climate today, and second, it is not easy to dispose of it after you are done using it. First of all, please do not throw your old pencils away. There are so many uses they do have in addition to writing or making drawings with them yourself, which include: 1. Donating to those who need it most

We’ve personally tested these pencils out and love the feel of the uncoated natural wood texture beneath our fingers as we write. The graphite is high quality and writes super smooth, without smudging too much if it gets rubbed over (though a little smudging is unavoidable). So as you work through all your scattered lists, you can toss these pieces of recycled stationery in your indoor compost bin instead of worrying about whether they’ll get recycled or not.

Pencils on the other hand are usually sourced from wood and graphite. We have already seen that wood used in making pens might add up to a whooping 80,000 trees every year. Graphite mining also makes use of machinery that might add to the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. On this point, it is really hard to decide which is better.
