About this deal

The fourth Master medal of this flight went to Rémy Martin XO. With aromas of “coffee, chocolate and waxy furniture polish”, leading to “soft baking spices, soft fruit and elegant wood spice” on the palate, the judges were hugely impressed.

A Master medal was also given to Jean Fillioux – Très Vieux Extra. The judges enjoyed “lovely notes of raisins and candied orange” on the nose, and “a good pinch of baking spice” on the palate. The round also produced five Gold medals. a b Ball, Deborah (2002-11-11). "Seagram Acquisition Proves To Be a Good Mix for Pernod". Wall Street Journal. ISSN 0099-9660 . Retrieved 2022-03-24. Just like with other cask or barrel aged alcohol, cognac pulls the flavor and color from the casks that it’s stored in. The older it is, the longer the cognac has been able to pull these qualities from the cask’s wood. The darker the cognac, the older and richer it is. Martell VSOP is the result of an uncompromising savoir-faire, which is defined by ageing eaux-de-vie exclusively in barrels of fine-grained oak. VS, VSOP and XO refer to the age and quality of the cognac. Each corresponds to how long the brandy has been aged in oak barrels. In 1983, following a request by the BNIC (Bureau National Interprofessionnel du Cognac)*, the French government drafted regulations governing the terms used to describe a cognacs’ quality. These designations, which may be included on the label, refer to the age of the youngest eau-de-vie used in making the cognac.Since 1715, Maison Martell has perpetuated an uncompromising savoir-faire defined by the decision to age its eaux-de-vie exclusively in barrels of fine-grained oak. XO stands for “Extra Old”: XO cognacs are made only from eaux-de-vie at least ten years old. Cognacs such as “Napoleon” or “Old Reserve” are equivalent to XO cognac. VS stands for “Very Special”: only eaux-de-vie at least two years old can be used to make a VS cognac. Other denominators and expressions are permitted, such as “3 stars” or “luxury”, and as such are included in the VS cognac category. The last flight of the day was Vintage – Single Cru, in which the final Master of the competition was discovered: Cognac Frapin – Millésime 1990.

This elegant and harmonious cognac, exemplifying Maison Martell’s approach to ageing, is now being unveiled in a vibrant, new design that is consistent with the House’s heritage and legacy of audacity. Public-service organisation responsible for looking after the interests of cognac and all related activities. Seagram was broken up in 2001, and Martell was acquired by Pernod Ricard. [13] Pernod repositioned the brand, making efforts to attract new consumers with multiple new product lines: Martell XO (released 2005), Martell Création Grand Extra (released 2007, in a bottle designed by the artist and glass designer Serge Mansau), L'Or de Jean Martell (released 2009). In 2011 the marque Martell expanded into an "ultra-prestige" range with Martell Chanteloup Perspective, a tribute to the know-how of the cellar masters and to the Domaine de Chanteloup. Martell is a cognac house founded in 1715 by Jean Martell. It is the oldest of the "big four" cognac houses (the others are Hennessy, Rémy Martin and Courvoisier), who together produce most of the world's cognac. [1] Formerly owned by the Seagram spirits empire, it is now part of the Martell Mumm Perrier-Jouët (MMPJ) subsidiary of the French wines and spirits conglomerate Pernod Ricard. [2] Martell's flagship Cordon Bleu, introduced in 1912, was for many years the world's highest-selling premium cognac. [2]a b Faith, Nicholas (2013-09-13). Cognac: The story of the world's greatest brandy. Infinite Ideas. ISBN 978-1-909652-46-0. It was a tough act to follow, but the following No Age Statement flight also had some strong medal contenders – three Gold winners, which were: Rémy Martin Tercet, which ad “decent length”; Rémy Martin Club, which delivered “luscious dried fruits”; and Rémy Martin 1738 Accord Royal, for its “nice wood and spice towards the end”.
