About this deal

This quirky, funny, highly-illustrated, fiction series follows life’s ups and downs of chaotic but loveable Tom, Delia, his old sister, his parents and of course his best friend Derek and his arch enemy, Marcus. Written by award-winning author and illustrator Liz Pichon, Tom is a master of excuses (especially when it comes to homework), creative storyteller and doodler and middle-school comedian extraordinaire. Tom Gates' humour comes to play as he refers to his grandparents—Frank’s parents; Granny Mavis and Granddad Bob as "The Fossils", while he calls Rita's parents "The Wrinklies". Tom and Derek are in a band called Dog Zombies, with Tom on the guitar, Derek on keyboards, and another classmate Norman Watson on drums. Don’t let your grumpy sister Delia BOSS you around. (Technically not a school issue – but still important.)

But just what isthat squeaking sound coming from Tom’s shoes? Tom Gates Book 13: Epic Adventure (kind of) Aged around 10 years old, Tom is the younger of the two children of Frank and Rita Gates, and the younger brother of Delia. [4] He attends Oakfield Primary School where he is in Mr Fullerman's Class 5F, under headmaster Mr Keen. Children in his class include Marcus Meldrew (who sits next to and consistently annoys Tom in class), and Amy Porter (who also sits next to Tom, but whom Tom hopes to impress). Also in his year at Oakfield is his best friend Derek Fingle, who also lives next door to him. Tom has a second neighbour, June Jones, that annoys Tom and dislikes his band. Annoy Delia. (Nothing to do with the band, but always FUN) Tom Gates Book 12: Family, Friends and Furry Creatures School is a big part of the Tom Gates universe, and is, of course, extremely relatable for children. The Beaky Maloneseries by Barry Hutchison and Katie Abey is even sillier, and Em Lynas' You Can't Make Me Go To Witch Schoolis full of anarchic magic and tons of laughs. Finally, there's always the fabulous Pamela Butchart, whose writing about school is spot on in terms of humour and observation. For more books about familieswhich is a pity, as he’s desperate to impress Amy Porter, who sits next to him… Tom Gates Book 2: Excellent Excuses (and Other Good Stuff)

There has also been a stage production, Tom Gates Live, which has travelled throughout the UK. There are currently no new dates planned. In 2020, Sky Kids announced that it was making The Brilliant World of Tom Gates to be available on Sky's on demand service Sky Kids in the UK and Ireland. [7] The first series, consisting of 20 animated episodes, was released in early 2021, featuring Catherine Tate as both Rita Gates and Granny Mavis, Mark Bonnar as Mr Fullerman, and Logan Matthews as Tom Gates. [8] [9] Creator Liz Pichon also appears in the episodes in a live-action segment in which she gives ideas for creating artwork inspired by the series. [10] The second series was released in 2022. The series also has the Halloween and Christmas specials. Watching squirrels steal stuff from the garden. (Who knew that would be SO much FUN?)” – is just out, and Pichon has no plans on calling a halt any time soon. Unfortunately a couple of small problems called the dentist and my big weirdo sister, Delia, seem to be getting in the way of my BRILLIANT plans… Tom Gates Book 3: Everything’s Amazing (Sort of) Songs included:Nice Cup of Teaby Tea Cup Tony and The Saucers; What You Gonna Do?by Plastic Cup;Shout it Outby Dude3;Delia’s A Weirdoby DogZombies; The Cat Songby DogZombies; The School Dinner Blues (Chips Song)by DogZombies. In this sequel, the author takes us on yet another journey into Tom’s life. His school band takes centre stage in this book, and you will love seeing how the kids perform using makeshift instruments. Tom will be doing a lot of drawing in between his performances while overindulging in caramel wafers, which possibly explains his sore tooth. He will also be going swimming, but when he forgets his swim trunks, he has no choice but to wear a teddy bear, one that makes him look like a 5-year-old. Tom’s family’s dynamics come clear in this story, and you cannot help but envy this boy who is surrounded by so much love.
