About this deal

Starting with CS:GO, we find that the 1% lows of the 5800X3D are improved by 81% from the 3600, while the average frame rate was boosted by 55% from 245 fps up to 380 fps. We've heard that more serious Counter-Strike players like to target over 300 fps, so if that happens to be you, then the 5800X3D will be a worthwhile upgrade. With the Radeon 6600 XT, the 5800X3D still enabled up to 73% greater performance and even 42% stronger performance at 1440p. Motherboard MSI B450 Gaming PRO Carbon Max WiFi (scheda madre basata su tecnologia B450, non supportava il PCIe 4.0 ma era una bomba con antenna wi fi integrata) Today we'll be comparing it against the Ryzen 5 3600 and for good measure we'll also throw in the Ryzen 5 5600 data we had already collected as well.

The conversion is done automatically once the nominator, e.g. 3600, and the denominator, e.g. 3, have been inserted. When talking about direct competition, the Intel Core i5 10400 is a good match for the AMD Ryzen 5 3600. The Intel chip is similarly a six-core and 12-thread processor, and with a max turbo frequency up to 4.3GHz, it's able to offer gaming performance more-or-less in line with the AMD chip. This chips base frequency of 2.9GHz does see it slip behind the Ryzen 5 3600 at times, however, so we're still team AMD on this one. At the heart of AMD's effort is the "Zen 2" microarchitecture, which sets out to match or exceed the IPC of Intel's latest "Coffee Lake" microarchitecture. This would be the first time in over 15 years that AMD beats Intel at IPC. While Intel led over AMD at IPC, AMD led over Intel at CPU core count. Intel responded to previous generations of Ryzen processors by increasing core counts of its mainstream-desktop processors for the first time in a decade. With the 9th generation Core, Intel achieved core-count parity, although AMD still holds a technical edge over Intel by offering SMT (simultaneous multi-threading) even to its Ryzen 5 series. But without question the most popular question we received afterwards was: should you buy the Ryzen 5 3600 or the 3600X?

Moving on to WinRAR, the R5 3600 looks very good, falling just short of the 8700K by a mere 4% margin. That made it 45% faster than the Core i7-7700K and Ryzen 7 2700X. The Ryzen 5 3600 was solid in Rage 2, averaging 160 fps and that meant it wasn't a great deal slower than the 9600K. Moreover, the R5 3600 was fast enough to find the limits of the RTX 2080 Ti at 1440p, though this was true of almost all CPUs tested. The Intel Core i5 was a little faster in a few of the games tested, but the R5 3600 was miles faster where you'll notice it. So this one's pretty cut and dry unless Intel decides to cut pricing heavily. We only see a 1 fps difference in The Division 2 and we should also note that the 3600X and 3600 match the 3700X in this title and we saw a similar thing when testing with Battlefield V and Assassin's Creed Odyssey. Compared to the R5 2600 it was 17% faster and a whopping 32% faster than the R5 1600 in V-Ray. The 3600 does come up short against the 8700K in the latest version of the V-Ray benchmark by a 6% margin. When testing with Hitman 2 we see that the R5 3600 was 7% slower than the i5-9600K when looking at the average frame rate, this isn't a great title for Ryzen CPUs. AMD's new 6-core CPU trailed the 8700K by a small margin in the Corona benchmark, but given the difference in price this remains a solid showing for the R5 3600.

With those details out of the way, let's go over about a dozen of the games tested and then we'll take a look at the 23 game average. Let's get into it... Benchmarks At 1440p the 5800X3D was 20% faster, seen when looking at the 1% lows. Interestingly, that margin opens up to 28% with the Radeon 6600 XT at 1080p and we even see a 12% performance advantage at 1440p for the 5800X3D. AM4 is also at the end of the line, so you can either upgrade now and still enjoy big performance gains, or wait around until Zen 4 makes sense and then dump your platform for a full upgrade, and it's not even clear if the first wave of Zen 4 CPUs will be faster than the 5800X3D for gaming. And of course, you'll need DDR5 memory, making that upgrade more expensive. Having tested both R5 3600 models (see all of that further down below), here's the tale of the tape:Moving on to Cyberpunk, which is a title that's typically GPU limited well before CPU performance becomes an issue, at least when running a modern processor. That said, using the 6950 XT at 1080p saw the 5800X3D race ahead by up to a 55% margin, hitting 171 fps on average. You can enable PBO with the box cooler, but it won't do much as you're already near the thermal limit. Basically we gained 25 MHz for a 4 degree increase in temperature... needless to be said, we don't recommend using PBO with the box cooler.
