Automotive Use HDMI Type E Connector "MX50/53 Series" Has Been Developed". Japan Aviation Electronics Industry. February 15, 2012. Archived from the original on February 8, 2013 . Retrieved August 6, 2012. The only thing you need to do is connect your first monitor directly to the HDMI port. Then, use another cable that supports both your second monitor and PC.

It's important to note that the cables themselves aren't tied to a specific version. There's no such thing as an HDMI 2.0 cable or an HDMI 2.1 cable. Instead, cables are put through a certification process that certifies them for certain maximum bandwidths. HDMI 2.0 generally requires a maximum bandwidth of 18Gbps, and cables that have been certified for that are labeled 'Premium'. The new cables that are certified for HDMI 2.1's maximum bandwidth of 48Gbps arelabeled as 'Ultra High Speed'. This doesn't mean that a 'Premium'cable can't be used with an HDMI 2.1 device, merely that it hasn't been certified for the extra bandwidth. The same goes the other way around, as you can easily use the Ultra High Speed cable on any older HDMI device. Q: Can my existing devices be upgraded? Most of us use HDMI cables to run dual monitors as they transmit high-quality video and sound. But, what if our PC has got only a single port? Often, we scratch our heads to find a possible solution for this. a b Even for a compressed audio codec that a given HDMI device cannot transport, the source device may be able to decode the audio codec and transmit the audio as uncompressed LPCM. From a user's perspective, an HDMI display can be driven by a single-link DVI-D source, since HDMI and DVI-D define an overlapping minimum set of allowed resolutions and frame-buffer formats to ensure a basic level of interoperability. In the reverse case, a DVI-D monitor has the same level of basic interoperability unless content protection with High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) interferes—or the HDMI color encoding is in component color space Y′C BC R instead of RGB, which is not possible in DVI. An HDMI source, such as a Blu-ray player, may require an HDCP-compliant display, and refuse to output HDCP-protected content to a non-compliant display. [55] A further complication is that there is a small amount of display equipment, such as some high-end home theater projectors, designed with HDMI inputs but not HDCP-compliant. Interestingly, HDMI is also integrated into home theater systems. Hence, we can use them for playing music and watching movies of superior quality. In 2008, PC Magazine awarded a Technical Excellence Award in the Home Theater category for an "innovation that has changed the world" to the CEC portion of the HDMI specification. [32] Ten companies were given a Technology and Engineering Emmy Award for their development of HDMI by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences on January 7, 2009. [33]

Male HDMI connectors, on the other hand, are generally supplied as fixed components at either end of almost every commercially available HDMI cable. In many situations, it’s easier and cheaper to replace a damaged male connector by swapping in a replacement cable. However, this isn’t always practical. Some high-end HDMI cables can be relatively expensive (especially the longer and sturdier types), and so in these cases, it can be considerably cheaper to wire a new male connector than to replace an entire cable run. The fourth version, superMHL, increased bandwidth by operating over multiple TMDS differential pairs (up to a total of six) allowing a maximum of 36 Gbit/s. [225] The six lanes are supported over a reversible 32-pin superMHL connector, while four lanes are supported over USB-C Alternate Mode (only a single lane is supported over micro-USB/HDMI). Display Stream Compression (DSC) is used to allow up to 8K Ultra HD (7680 × 4320) 120Hz HDR video, and to support Ultra HD 60Hz video over a single lane. [225] See also [ edit ]

With the new, higher bandwidth requirements of HDMI 2.1, new methods of compression are required. The most common method of compressing video streams is a technology called Display Stream Compression (DSC). Itwas initially developed with computers in mind and couldn't encode most TV signals efficiently. The VESA groupresponsible for maintaining DSC released an updated version of DSC, known as DSC 1.2, which increases the maximum color depth to 16-bit and enables native YCbCr 4:2:0 and YCbCr 4:2:2 encoding without the need to convert to RGB first.

Essentially, HDMI 2.1 has the capability to double-down on what HDMI 2.0 can manage. 2.1-standard connections can easily outstrip the 4K limit, sending a maximum of 10K content at 120fps down the pipe. HDMI Cable Power will be available for all categories of HDMI cable, but for ARC/eARC support, you'll want to look out for cables labelled as Ultra High-Speed HDMI Cable, Premium High-Speed HDMI Cable with Ethernet, High-Speed HDMI Cable with Ethernet or Standard HDMI Cable with Ethernet.
