About this deal

Maybe there was somebody in the town who had been involved in what had happened, somebody who knew what had happened, somebody who was keeping secrets. It's a tightly woven plot for sure but with what I thought was really quite convoluted storytelling. So it's unfortunate that I struggled to really engage with this one. The narratives kept constantly changing with no clear distinction, timeframes changed just as constantly. So it would either be in the past to that tragic night or in the present again with little distinction whilst reading. I found it a strange way of writing and it just didn't flow for me at all. It felt really disjointed and, if I'm honest, hard work. There was a large cast of characters, and I would often forget who was who and had nothing to refer to as I was reading an ebook. Even the placement and settings did nothing much for me. It was well described and all felt suitably bleak in the small costal village with vivid descriptions of marshes, crumbled houses and muddy shorelines. Asking an author to choose the favorite book he or she wrote is often like asking a grandparent to choose a favorite grandchild; it results in a meaningless response like “they are all special to me.” Agatha Christie, perhaps the best pure mystery writer of all time, might be forgiven had she made a similar statement. However, Christie never hesitated in naming her two favorite books, one of which was Crooked House (she says as much in the introduction to this edition), and, after reading the book, I can understand why. When Esme Grace was thirteen years old something catastrophic happened to her family. She had to change her name, cut herself off from the past and start a new life as a new person. You are a precocious child in a complicated world filled with scheming relatives & heirs to fortune & smitten suitors & gold-digging wives & husky tutors & cast-out sons & amateur sleuths. Your life is centered within a vast country manor dominated by your dread grandfather, who sits like a senescent spider in the center of his enormous web, a web whose tangles he created but no longer bothers to repair. Then murder strikes and grandfather is no more! What is a young girl to do? How long will your little flame burn in such a bleak and venomous environment? Never fear, tiny dancer, you are wise beyond your years... but what path shall you choose?

Wiseman, Andreas (13 September 2016). "Agatha Christie thriller 'Crooked House' underway". Screen Daily. Screen International . Retrieved 26 September 2016.The action takes place in and near London in the autumn of 1947. Christie said the titles of this novel and Ordeal by Innocence were her favourites amongst her own works.

On their arrival in Saltleigh Alison realises she’ll have no choice but to confront her demons. Not only are her own memories of her time there vivid, but it seems the relatively-closed community remembers Esme and her tragic past as well. The story is told to us from the point of view of Charles Heyward, the intended of Sophia Leonides, who gets involved himself in the investigation of the murder of Sophia's grandfather, the millionaire Aristide Leonides. Since this is a closed-door crime, suspicion is naturally directed at the family. And Charles and Sophia must find the criminal and clear the dreadful suspicion hanging over the family before they could be united. Lady Edith de Haviland was the sister of Aristide's late first wife; she moved in to care for her motherless nephews. She despised her brother-in-law as a parvenu and for his callousness towards his grandchildren. Edith stalks around the grounds, blasting moles in the lawn with a shotgun. I won a copy of this book in a giveaway run by the publisher. This is my honest opinion of the book.

Me encantó Josefina, me hice su fan número 1 desde el momento en que la describen como condenadamente fea y morbosa (tengo debilidad por ese tipo de personajes, sean buenos o malos... mujajajajaja).Charles's father, "The Old Man", is the Assistant Commissioner of Scotland Yard, so Charles investigates from the inside along with assigned detective, Chief Inspector Taverner. Agatha Mary Clarissa Miller was born in Torquay, Devon, England, U.K., as the youngest of three. The Millers had two other children: Margaret Frary Miller (1879–1950), called Madge, who was eleven years Agatha's senior, and Louis Montant Miller (1880–1929), called Monty, ten years older than Agatha.

A condensed version of the novel was first published in the US in Cosmopolitan magazine in the issue for October 1948 (Volume 125, Number 4) with an illustration by Grushkin. ABOUT THIS BOOK: In the sprawling, half-timbered mansion in the affluent suburb of Swinly Dean, Aristide Leonides lies dead from barbiturate poisoning. An accident? Not likely. In fact, suspicion has already fallen on his luscious widow, a cunning beauty fifty years his junior, set to inherit a sizeable fortune, and rumored to be carrying on with a strapping young tutor comfortably ensconced in the family estate. But criminologist Charles Hayward is casting his own doubts on the innocence of the entire Leonides brood. He knows them intimately. And he's certain that in a crooked house such as Three Gables, no one's on the level...No Marple. No Tuppence. No Poirot. Mon Dieu! Yet this short Christie mystery remains one of my favorites, likely due to the interesting characterization and well-crafted plot. It gradually builds tension, with a rather unanticipated but satisfying ending. Charles' suspicions even extend to Sophia after another, properly signed, will is discovered, leaving the estate to her. Aristide's son Eustace however suggests that Sophia hired Charles to investigate the murder due to their personal history, knowing he would never accuse her due to their romantic past.
