In The Coldest Case, Bruno helps solve the mystery of a skull found 30 years ago. In Martin's familiar writing style, this is another soft mystery. There are the joys of rural life, Bruno's elderly but trusty Land Rover, lots of food and wine, plenty of gardening tips plus a small measure of romance.

I fell in love with Bruno, the Chief of Police again, what a gentleman. Charming. The way in which this book was written, the quality of the writing is excellent. I was transported to the Dordogne, I love France and now want to go to the Perigord region. Politics aside, this is another great book by Martin Walker. I always wait for a new “Bruno” novel. It’s like visiting old friends, with a murder mixed in. St. Denis sounds like such a beautiful place. This section does not cite any sources. Outstanding Individual Episode (in a Series without a Regular LGBT Character) (For episode "Boy Crazy") For thirty years, Bruno's boss, Chief of Detectives Jalipeau, known as J-J, has been obsessed with his first case. It was never solved and Bruno knows that this failure continues to haunt J-J. A young male body was found in the woods near St Denis and never identified. For all these years, J-J has kept the skull as a reminder. He calls him 'Oscar'. A little further investigation told Barker that several key figures in the Wiley case—Shelli’s sister and niece, her roommate at the time of the murder (who had been at her boyfriend’s home that night), and the police detective who had revived the cold case—were convinced that Lamb had killed Wiley. Lamb often stayed at a friend’s apartment in the same complex, he was there alone on the night of the crime, and his blood was found at the scene. But Lamb was a former police officer, well-known to the detectives investigating the crime, and his accusers insist that he was never taken seriously as a suspect for that reason.
