About this deal

While phone holders might appear to be a little humdrum, some of these accessories are even handier. The iOttie Easy One Touch Wireless 2, for example, not only allows you to keep your smartphone safe and secure, it’ll also recharge it wirelessly. Again, top marks go to iOttie for designing a unit that’s very nicely made and there are variations so you can choose between dashboard or windshield mounting, cup holder and vent editions too. Many phones have their lens behind the top right corner of the screen, but if your phone is different it should be easy to adapt the layout of the base plate to suit.

Product names for smartphone holders are often highly descriptive, but as a result two products from the same company can have lengthy, near-identical names. Pay special attention to whether a product name highlights its attachment type (vent, suction or adhesive) or how it grips the phone (magnetic or vice/clamp).Some folks prefer to opt for the vent-mounted phone holder accessory. In which case there are many options at your disposal. One of the most impressive we’ve tried is the Kenu Airframe Pro, which in the tradition of car phone mounts goes for a ‘less is more’ approach on the design front. This is a positive however as there’s very little effort involved in getting the thing into position.

However, while the Scosche MagicMount can get into areas other phone holders can’t this phone holder is still wonderfully flexible. In fact, it’ll move through a full 90 degrees once you’ve fixed the mount in place, which should mean that you’ll be able to see your smartphone screen from wherever it’s been attached. Some telescope kits even come with their own smartphone adapter, so if you're entirely new to astronomy and think you might want to capture what you see, these are a good option.

What makes the best smartphone mount? We assess suction, vent, magnetic and adhesive phone mounts.

By exchanging the eyepiece for one of a different focal length, the size of the image can be varied. This technique is known as 'eyepiece projection' or 'afocal imaging', and requires a steady hand indeed. As is the case with many phone holders, there’s not a lot to it, but the design works really well. This is largely down to its simplicity, with nothing more than an adhesive pad to contend with in terms of fitting. It’ll work a treat on many surfaces, including vertical areas of your dash as well as less practical locations where other phone mounts can’t even get near. While phone holders work well when mounted in, on or around the dashboard area, another route you can take is to go for the windshield-friendly accessory instead. In the case of the Exshow Car Mount holder you get a great solution that works with most smartphone models. It also holds the phone pretty steady to remove the risk of shakes that will affect your final image.

You can also get suction grips and cradles that attach directly to your dashboard, although this won’t work if it has a textured surface. Another possibility is to connect the holder to your car stereo. Once you've got it set up, all you need to do is make sure you get a good capture of your chosen target! Keep your phone safe and visible for hands-free satnav, calls and music

These restrictions apply in all Australian states and territories for all C-class drivers. It doesn't matter if you're fully-licensed, your phone is mounted, or if you use hands-free controls such as voice commands. A car phone holder is a must-have. Today’s smartphones can give you easy access to satnav features with up-to-date maps and traffic info, while also allowing you to play music and podcasts as you travel. With voice assistants, you can even use them to make calls or receive and send texts hands-free. The other plus point about the TechMatte model is that it seems to have been designed by someone who clearly cares about preserving their car interior. Part with a few pennies for some uber cheap car phone holders on the market and you’re asking for trouble. Not so with the TechMatte edition as it attaches to a variety of dashboard vents without fuss or, indeed, leaving marks, scratches or scuffs in the process.
