About this deal

That brings us to the advantages of the FE version. The first is that while the MC-11 often does an excellent job with adapted lenses, it is one device that needs to multitask for a variety of different focus needs. The 24 ART, like other ART lenses in an FE mount, has dedicated hardware design to bridge the gap for that specific lens from the original focus system to the unique needs and advantages of Sony’s hybrid AF system. And, with a few exceptions that I’ll detail in a moment, it does quite a good job of doing so. Sigma’s service can change the mount of the lens between Sony’s E-mount and L-mount (at a cost). This is a unique feature that no other manufacturer offers. [++] Stopping down (narrowing) the aperture is always an option for preventing over-exposure, though stopping down negates the value of the wide f/1.4 aperture and loses the subject-isolating shallow depth of field. if you mostly shoot at f/5.6 or smaller apertures (or f/2.8 for most of the frame), the differences in resolution will be negligible, and they’re both very sharp lenses regardless Capture breathtaking images with ease in any lighting condition with the SIGMA 24mm F1.4 DG DN | Art lens, featuring wide viewing angle and astrophotography-level optical performance

Regarding focus speed: The Sigma focuses in around 0.5 sec from infinity to 0.3m (1:10 magnification) – which is pretty fast but comparable to the Sony, Viltrox, and 24mm Sigma. There was no hunting under the well-lit test conditions. The focus ring is 26mm wide and well damped – but still can be turned with one finger. Its surface is rubberized and has a good grip. F/11 brings on increased depth of field that provides significant improvement in corner image quality. In addition to reducing camera shake, the stabilized imaging sensor provides a still viewfinder image, enabling careful composition.

The lens mount is impressively made using brass, and as mentioned also includes a rear gelatin filter slot.

Everyone loves those factors, and despite having an ultra-wide aperture, this lens has a reasonable size, weight, and price. The Sigma 24mm F1.4 DG DN Art Lens is a good choice for those looking for the 24mm angle of view and an ultra-wide aperture at a reasonable price. TSC is a state-of-the-art polycarbonate that is designed to be both lightweight and extremely durable, and its chemical makeup means it doesn't shrink or expand with changing temperatures. All in all, autofocus is good enough that you will instantly forget about it and instead be able to focus on the images you are creating. Sigma 24DN ART Image Quality Though bokeh is less of a concern with wide angle lenses than many others, both lenses did pretty well in my limited tests. Looking at this set of out-of-focus stage lights, we see that the bokeh in both cases is nicely round without busy artifacts or contrasty edges (though I personally like the contrast in the bokeh of the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 ART lens, for example, it’s all a matter of taste). In some areas, I did see a hint of the concentric circles that are typical of aspherical lenses in the Sigma (often called “onion rings”), but they were just that… hints, not obvious patterns.

Focal Length

The Sigma 24mm F1.4 DG DN Art Lens design includes two FLD elements and one SLD element to correct for chromatic aberrations and ensure overall high image quality. If you’re a Canon shooter there’s the EF 24mm f1.4 L USM II priced at around 1500 EUR (incl. 19% VAT).

With the hood removed, about 3.7" (94mm) of working distance is available, still making shadows a concern for lighting. Just before wrapping-up, a few more comments for videographers. 24mm is a nice focal length for handheld vlogging, and you can see it here at f2 using IBIS only on the A7 III. There’s much nicer subject separation than the Sony 2.8 and Sigma 3.5 models, although like all 24mm lenses the view can be a little too tight. The Sigma 24mm F1.4 DG DN Art Lens vs. Sony FE 24mm F1.4 GM Lens comparison shows the Sigma lens is slightly larger and slightly heavier. This is an in-depth review of the Sigma 24mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art lens that was announced in February of 2015. Being a professional-grade wide-angle lens, the Sigma 24mm f/1.4 Art was made to challenge similar offerings from both Nikon and Canon, but at a much lower price point. Previously, Sigma had a lot of success with its Art-series lenses such as the 35mm f/1.4 Art, so it made sense that the company would continue to make similar class lenses as great, budget-friendly third-party alternatives. Spherical aberration, along with spherochromatism, or a change in the amount of spherical aberration with respect to color (looks quite similar to axial chromatic aberration but is hazier) are other common lens aberrations to observe.APS-C format cameras using lenses projecting a full-frame-sized image circle avoid most vignetting problems. Unfortunately, just like some of the earlier Sigma Art-series lenses, the 24mm f/1.4 Art does not have a rubber gasket on the rear mount. This means that you have to watch out for dust, moisture and other debris between the lens and the camera mount or it might make it into the camera (and potentially into the lens). For this reason, I would recommend to try to keep the rear metal mount area clean at all times. Autofocus Performance and Accuracy

Optical construction is 17 elements in 14 groups, including 2 FLD, 1 SLD and 4 aspherical. The FLD elements use glass that mimics the performance of Fluorite. The diaphragm comprises 11 blades, which promises smooth bokeh. The front element is water and oil repellent and the whole lens is dust and splashproof. The instruction manual does quantify the water resistance as being able to resist light rain, but not a thorough soaking. Anti-reflection measures are aided by super multi-layer coating and nanoporous coating. The image below is a 100% crop taken from the top-left corner of a Sony a1 image captured at f/1.4. From a sharpness perspective, the bar was set high (in my mind, at least), and I hoped for slightly better performance at f/1.4, especially in the extreme corners. The image quality comparison shows the Sony lens earning its higher price, producing sharper f/1.4 image quality.Close-up focus is available to 9.9 inches, which is good enough for 1:7.1 life-size reproductions. If you're looking for a wide prime for macro shots though, these results might disappoint. But that's also the case with other wide aperture 24mm lenses. The Sony FE 24mm F1.4 GM gets a little closer (9.9 inches for 1:5.9 macros) and the Sigma 24mm F2 Contemporary is in the same ballpark (9.7 inches for 1:6.7 reproductions). Photographers who love leaning in are better off with the Sigma 24mm F3.5 or Tamron 24mm F2.8, both of which focus close for 1:2 magnification. Coma occurs when light rays from a point of light spread out from that point instead of being refocused as a point on the sensor. The lower the aperture number, the wider the opening, and the more light the lens can deliver to the imaging sensor. Comes with a 9 blade-rounded diaphragm which creates an attractive blur to the out-of-focus areas of the image Focusing is completely internal so the front element neither extends nor rotates. Autofocus is extremely rapid, precise and whisper-quiet, based on a ring-type ultrasonic system that features the usual full-time manual override. Typical of up-market Sigma lenses, a petal shaped lens hood and soft case are included.
