About this deal

Quite a few pads in the 7 Protection range feature top downhill rider Sam Hill's signature, and the Lite is sort of the baby bear of the family – in the sense that it has the lowest protection level and the lightest weight.Like the regular Sam Hill pad reviewed above, the Lite features an SAS-TEC protector and similar Lycra construction (albeit with less lateral protection), coupled with slimmer design and a lower price point. Other factors such as straps and zippers could impact comfort and fit. Some riders prefer knee pads with straps, while others may prefer minimalistic pads that rely on silicone grippers to stay over the knee area. Next up ION K-Lite: These were ok, except for being really warm for a "light" pad. I found myself sweating more than normal (and that is a lot) which was a no go for me. I guess I could have lived with that but aside from the heat they were too big for me... away they went.

Johan loves bikes, which strangely doesn’t make him any better at riding them. After many years spent practicing falling off cliffs with his snowboard, he took up mountain biking in 2005. Ever since, he’s mostly been riding bikes with too much suspension travel to cover up his many flaws as a rider. His 200-pound body weight coupled with unique skill for poor line choice and clumsy landings make him an expert on durability - if parts survive Johan, they’re pretty much okay for anybody. Johan rides flat pedals with a riding style that he describes as "none" (when in actuality he rips!). Having found most trail features to be not to his liking, Johan uses much of his spare time building his own. Johan’s other accomplishments include surviving this far and helping keep the Vital Media Machine’s stoke dial firmly on 11. The pedaling-friendly knee protection segment has grown dramatically over the last few years, and there are now dozens of options that are designed to be worn all day without causing discomfort. Protection) warrants all original 7iDP products for a period of one year to be free of any defects in workmanship or materials. The warranty does not extend to any damage experienced through crashing, misuse, abuse, negligence, poor fit, modification or alteration or if used other than in the manner intended. Developed with Sam Hill, these are for aggressive trail and enduro riders who seek a lightweight and protective set of knee pads. A hard shell (think DH/motocross helmet) - has an outer shell made typically of Carbon, Glass Fibre or ABS. The shell protects the EPS foam core from puncture and absorbs energy on impact. A typical micro shell helmet (think XC/trail/road helmet) does not have a substantial outer shell, as a consequence provides inferior protection. The first option is a hardshell elbow guard that features tough plastic panels. This style is preferable for gravity-orientated riding, including downhill and park riding, because it provides protection against serious impacts. The second option is a lightweight pad, which is what we have focused on in this guide. These often use reactive materials such as D3O and Sas-Tec, which harden on impact to provide a good degree of protection but should also be flexible, lightweight and breathable. Please call to get prior authorization before returning any item, regardless of reason, to request a Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA). USG Inc. cannot accept returned merchandise without an RMA. I give them 4 out of 5. This is my initial review, so there's room to move up or down. I was on the verge of 3.5, but so far my biggest complaint is the price, so minus one star. It all comes down to both the material of the sleeve and whether it features any perforation or other ventilation. Pads with more ventilation features will generally be more breathable, and therefore comfortable.

The pad does extend quite a way up your thigh, and it's worth consulting their sizing chart, which was accurate for me. The grippers do a thorough job without leaving any marks or soreness on the skin. This is a nicely designed, high-quality knee pad that comes in individual sizes with a comfortable smart-tech insert offering loads of protection. Breathability is great, and even though a little on the expensive side, the quality and construction are both first rate.

Another thing that impacts comfort is breathability and ventilation, which will be discussed later. Do you get hot wearing mountain bike knee pads?

They can be a bit stiff until they warm up in colder weather but once they warm up they mold to your knee. I’ve done many 30 plus mile rides with them and they just disappear. Even after the ride I’m in no rush to get them off either. I can’t say that about any other pad I’ve owned. The thing with these pads is they are so comfortable that I wear them all the time.

Removable protective inserts for washing: Yes, the insert on the Sam Hill pads is removable for washing. Pros: Super comfy, protective and lightweight, pedal all day pads that can be relied upon to stay in place when you crash. Rumour has it that these pads will help you ride sketchy inside lines just that little bit better.

Internal grippers are often used to help lightweight pads stay in place. As long as the fit is correct, these will go virtually unnoticed when you’ve got them on and can easily be worn all day. Fit I took the plunge on these (a very spendy, especially for me, 90€ plunge) after trying a couple of contenders to start with; Protection comes down to two things: coverage and the protective padding itself. The protective padding should encapsulate the entire knee cap, as that's why you are wearing the pads in the first place. The sleeves of the pads should also cover the areas both above and below the actual knee cap.Running the length of the pad in the rear and extending across the lower front a breathable 4-way stretch mesh maintains airflow for all-day comfort. Considering the protection and coverage I think they're perfectly reasonable in terms of how they retain heat. I also like how far along past the knee they extend. The area of coverage is far bigger than many other pedal-ready pads. The supplementary side padding is a welcome appendage, even if it isn't as burly as the main insert. There is around 10 mm of shared overlapped coverage before the padding in the sleeve extends 15 mm further than the outer edge of the harder and stiffer insert.
