The PSA Pass Centre is open between 8.00am and 5.00pm from Monday to Friday only and is closed on Public Holidays. The last queue number will be issued at 4.30pm for any application and collection. Each question has 10 marks available (5 for the drug choice and 5 for the choice of dose/route/frequency).

PSA questions are predominantly based on information that can be found within the BNF. This includes: drug dose, drug route, drug frequency, side effects, adjustments in renal impairment, monitoring requirements and so on. It has a wealth of information beyond simply drug dosing, including interactions and treatment summaries. Mnemonics can be super helpful. There are a few things like enzyme inducers and inhibitors that you will need to rote learn and mnemonics can help with that. In addition:• Introduces a simple, memorable and failsafe approach to prescribing (the ‘PReSCRIBER’ mnemonic). You will be provided with a clinical scenario and some investigation results and tasked with determining the most appropriate course of action forward with regard to prescribing. (e.g withdrawing a medication, reducing its dose, no change, increasing its dose or switching to a new medication). Variable Price

You will not be allowed to bring anything into the exam other than a calculator, pencil, pen and the paper version of the BNF. You will have online access to the BNF and NICE guidelines throughout the exam. The treatment is often tailored to individual patients and depends can potentially depend on factors such as gender (e.g duration of UTI treatment for men is 7 days), drug history and allergies. The Pass Centre will be closed at 12.00 noon on the eve of the New Year, Lunar New Year and Christmas Day.For F1s, the PSA certificate does not have an expiry date as such. A PSA pass within two years prior to starting the F1 year is valid, but the pass does not expire during the F1 year (e.g. if a trainee joins the foundation programme in August 2022 and passed the PSA in February 2021, the PSA certificate would not expire in February 2023 before their F1 year is complete). If trainees are required to record an expiry date in their e-portfolio it is suggested that the last date of the F1 year is entered. As well as offering the potential for improving health, it is an activity associated with potential hazards: a GMC-sponsored study found that 9% of hospital prescriptions contain errors ( 'An in depth investigation into causes of prescribing errors by foundation trainees in relation to their medical education - EQUIP study'). It is also apparent in other research that this is the area of the Foundation Doctor role that new graduates find the most challenging ( The state of medical education and practice in the UK report: 2014 and Be prepared: are new doctors safe to practice?). As a result, in Outcomes for graduates(originally published in Tomorrow's Doctors), the GMC defined prescribing competencies required of new medical school graduates. Ctrl F’ is your friend. The BNF is huge so ‘Ctrl F’ is ideal for finding drug interactions and side effects easily. Read carefully whether you are being asked to assess that the treatment is working/ beneficial or whether you are assessing for adverse effects – you will do different tests for each of these.
