About this deal

After years of planning, that bridge appeared overnight in James Street in September 1970 and opened the following year.

You didn’t think I would write an entire Liverpool post without spending a good chunk of it writing about the Beatles, did you?My name is Martin Greaney, and I did my undergraduate studies (BA Archaeology and Prehistory) at Sheffield Uni, and stayed there to do my MA in Landscape Archaeology. After completing this, I worked for English Heritage’s National Monuments Record (now the Historic England Archives), helping them put thousands of their records online. But that was all a long time ago now… I limited myself to the area within Queens Drive for a few reasons. Firstly, I need to stop somewhere! Queens Drive provides the perfect boundary, encircling the city as it does. In the future I may add streets outside this boundary. For neatness’ sake, I’ve clipped roads which cross Queens Drive and head off into the surburbs. My second reason is that by far the most frequent requests for road locations are from within this area. So all in all, it made sense to release this tool with the current data, and expand later on if possible. Accuracy of a map of old streets of Liverpool Part of the collection includes many images from Merseyside, which is very fitting as Francis Firth became a founding member of the Liverpool Photographic Society in 1853. A leader in the ECHO in December 1967 said: “The James Street walkway will be at least a promise that a day is coming when vehicles and walkers are no longer in thrombotic contention in the main arteries in the heart of Liverpool.”

Geographia became known as a company that produced detailed street maps for navigating your way around cities. Their clear printing and extensive index (in a book stapled to this map as an extra) made it a go-to tool, and we historians today can benefit from it. Liverpool's seven streets were Bank Street (now Water Street), Castle Street, Chapel Street, Dale Street, Juggler Street (now High Street), Moor Street (now Tithebarn Street) and Whiteacre Street (now Old Hall Street). It’s a partner to a South Sheet, also available on Historic Liverpool. There are also concentric circles showing distances from the Town Hall, each one quarter of a mile apart. On one end of Hope Street stands the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral. This modernist structure, completed in 1967, boasts a unique circular design, and its many stained glass windows make for a colourful interior. Bold Street is the coolest of all Liverpool roads if you’re into independent local businesses. Take a stroll down Bold Street, and you’ll be greeted by a delightful mix of vintage clothes shops, indie book shops, record shops, and galleries showing off local artists’ work.

It’s worth playing the song in your earphones as you wander. You’ll see many places Paul references, like the barber, the bank where the banker who never wears a mac worked, and the shelter in the middle of the roundabout. From trendy tapas joints to authentic Italian trattorias, from bustling German beer gardens to cosy bistros, Hanover Street offers a gastronomic adventure like no other. It’s well worth a visit! Nearby, St. George’s Hall stands as Liverpool’s own example of Greek Revival architecture, hosting concerts, and events, and even being used as a filming location. You may recognise it from the John Lennon biopic, “ Nowhere Boy”.For beautiful, historic images from the past have a look at memorylane.co.uk/ and see what you can discover Paul and his family moved to 20 Forthlin Road when he was around 13 until he was famous! It was on this street that he honed his musical skills, collaborating with John Lennon and laying the foundation for his world-changing career.

What’s most interesting is the role the Beatles association plays in the debate – it seems to have been a large factor in the decision not to rename ANY Liverpool streets. Perhaps if it was not for this connection, Penny Lane (like my proposed other suburban streets, above) would not have been mentioned at all. Or old pictures of the overhead railway line that once graced the waterfront. The stunning images are just a tiny glimpse of the wider collection. The version available on Historic Liverpool is an adapted version of the original, with the wards colour-coded. This old map covers Toxteth to Princes Park (and includes a slice of Sefton Park on its eastern edge), shows areas of West Derby, including undeveloped streets to the north of Edge Lane, and covers the very centre of Liverpool. On a summer day in 2001, Coe and a small band of investigators literally “broke into” a suspected tunnel in the Paddington area of Edge Hill. With the help of a digger, they made a small hole in the roof of what turned out to be an old cellar: the upper level of one of the tunnel systems. Even 200 years after Williamson offered ready work to the men of Edge Hill, his tunnels are still keeping the locals busy. The Frith images also make a great talking point for young and old, as many older people love looking at our images online and sharing their memories of these places with the younger generation. So if you fancy learning more, we've put together a list of places where you can walk the cobbled streets. Anyways – these cathedrals represent a harmonious blend of old and new, and their presence on Hope Street shows off Liverpool’s diverse religious heritage. You’ll also find one of the best hotels with private balconies on Hope Street- the Hope Street Hotel! 7. Menlove Avenue If you’re a Beatles fan or just someone who loves music – there’s one Liverpool street you absolutely can’t miss – Mathew Street! Known as one of the best Beatles landmarks in the city, Mathew Street is a holy ground for music lovers.
