About this deal

To simplify your search for a great face moisturizer, we put 64 face moisturizers to the test in The Verywell Testing Lab and at home. We tested 29 moisturizers for oily skin and 35 moisturizers for dry skin. And we divided our testers into two teams based on skin type: 18 tested the moisturizers for oily skin, while 21 tested the moisturizers for dry skin.

The moisturizer was lightweight, fast-absorbing, and easy to apply. And it left our oily skin looking glowy rather than greasy. According to our moisture meter, the gel boosted moisture in our skin by 1 to 15 percent, making us feel hydrated without any heaviness. And while we wouldn’t recommend it for dry skin, it’s great for oily and combination skin. It’s also fragrance-free and sensitive-skin-friendly. Ultimately, ceramides keep external invaders away while keeping moisture sealed in to encourage skin that looks and feels healthy and soft. Because the moisturizer contains essential oils, like lavender and tea tree oil, it has a strong smell—and we didn’t love the fragrance. Since we appreciate the emphasis on natural ingredients, we’re happy to tolerate the smell. And we suspect we might get used to it the more we wear this moisturizer.Though the cream wasn’t as fast-absorbing as some of our other favorites, it didn’t take long to soak in. And it felt lightweight, comfortable, and easy to wear. Given its non-greasy texture, the moisturizer is great for various skin types, like dry, combination, and sensitive skin. And if you have oily skin, Versed recommends using the rich lotion as a night cream—not an everyday moisturizer. If there’s one thing our dermatologists want you to know, it’s that anyone—regardless of skin type or condition—can benefit from using a ceramide moisturizer. “There’s no real reason to not use a ceramide moisturizer,” says Dr. Soza, adding that they’re especially beneficial for those with dry or sensitive skin. However, certain types of moisturizers are best for specific skin types based on their consistency and ingredient lists. We consulted five experts for further advice and recommendations: dermatologist Hadley King, MD-FAAD;dermatologist Noreen Galaria, MD-FAAD;dermatologist Gloria Lin, MD-FAAD; fitness instructor Jess Paris, NASM, CPT; and Rumble Boxing trainer Taylor Sanders, CPT.

Since skin barrier function is universally important, ceramides in skin care can benefit all skin types and conditions, says Rhonda Klein, MD, FAAD, board-certified dermatologist and co-founder of Modern Dermatology in Westport, Connecticut. Those with skin prone to dryness, eczema, psoriasis, or the signs of aging may benefit most from using a ceramide moisturizer, she adds, but everyone can (and should) incorporate them. I was immediately sold when I saw all the benefits: hydrating ingredients, no synthetic fragrances or parabens, and suitable for sensitive skin. We've all been told to look out for certain ingredients in a moisturizer — like niacinamide, ceramides, and hyaluronic acid. Because these are such powerhouses that hydrate, strengthen, and repair skin, some moisturizers containing these ingredients can get crazy expensive, and worse, they can also contain irritating ingredients like synthetic fragrance. Ceramides occur naturally in the skin, but synthetic ceramides are used in skin care products. They also tend to be more stable. Our only issue with this product? It’s not cruelty-free. And we know that for many people, that’s not just a downside—it’s a dealbreaker.Daily sunscreen is a must, but if you want to simplify your morning routine, look for a ceramide moisturizer with added SPF like this one from La Roche-Posay. “I like this one a lot for morning routines,” says Dr. Klein, adding that the SPF 30 is great for everyday use. Since it contains sunscreen ingredients, we noticed a slight sunscreen smell, but it was light and didn’t linger throughout the day. When we tested Shiseido’s Waso Mega Hydrating Moisturizer on oily skin, it proved hydrating—but it made our skin feel oilier. The moisturizer was also slow-absorbing and prone to pilling, but we think it’d be effective for combating dryness. I have combination, acne- and redness-prone skin that's very sensitive — it's a real trip shopping for skincare products that won't irritate it even more. Some PBS medications are restricted and require prior approval from Medicare before a doctor is able to prescribe them on the PBS. This prior approval to prescribe grants the doctor the Authority to prescribe the desired medicine and have it funded under the PBS.

Great for sensitive skin, innisfree’s Green Tea Seed Hyaluronic Acid Cream is made without parabens, sulfates, or synthetic colors. And it contains less than 1 percent of synthetic fragrance. It’s also an effective moisturizer, leaving our skin looking dewy and feeling hydrated shortly after we put it on. Read more: This startup helps you replace your skincare routine with clean beauty products using a simple quiz — I tried everything it recommended To find the best ceramide moisturizers, we tested them in The Verywell Testing Lab and in the real world. With three Double Repair Moisturizers to choose from within La Roche-Posay’s Toleriane line, it can be tough to make a choice. Here’s everything you need to know about each product to discover which is the best match for your skin care routine. La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Matte MoisturizerThough the moisturizer is made for acne-prone skin, it’s also great for oily and combination skin. We also love that it’s fragrance-free and appreciate the budget-friendly price.

As Galaria noted, oil-free moisturizers are great for oily skin—and Tatcha’s The Water Cream is no exception. But the lightweight moisturizer takes things a step further: One of its key ingredients, leopard lily, actually reduces the amount of oil in your skin. Outside of the lab, we tested each moisturizer for four weeks by applying it as the last step of our normal skincare routines and continuing with our usual activities. Prior to applying each moisturizer, we measured the moisture level on our clean skin using a moisture reader and then took moisture readings at the end to compare.

Miscellaneous

The details: This brand-new Double Repair option is formulated to provide all-day hydration without the shine and helps to repair the skin barrier after one hour. The addition of silica and perlite help control excess oil, keep skin shine-free all day and minimize the appearance of pores. It will leave all skin tones with even the most sensitive skin feeling refreshed with a matte finish. La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer The moisturizer is also one of the most versatile on our list. In addition to being great for different skin types (including dry, oily, and combination skin), it’s fragrance-free and sensitive-skin-friendly. And at a budget-friendly price, we think it’s a steal. SkinCeuticals’ Daily Moisture is one of the priciest moisturizers we tested. But we think it’s worth every penny. The moisturizer contains hyaluronic acid, algae extract, panthenol, vitamin E, and witch hazel. So it does a lot at once, simultaneously hydrating, toning, and exfoliating your skin.
