Other instant cameras use Zink paper, which uses heat to activate colors in the paper. The advantage to Zink is that you don’t have to worry about accidentally exposing the paper to light, as you do with Instax film. However, we’ve found that Zink prints tended to be less vibrant overall. For example, the foreground of an indoor photo of a train set was completely white, and while the train itself was properly exposed, it was blurry — no doubt a result of the camera slowing its shutter speed. However, enabling the camera's flash merely resulted in a photo that was even more washed out. With the Mini Shot, you have to wait for the printing process to finish before you can take additional photos. To put it simply, an instant film camera is designed with its own little internal developing studio in which all the mechanisms necessary to develop the instant film exist. These instant film cameras must be outfitted with self-developing film, which removes the need for you to develop the film yourself or bring it someplace where it can be developed for you. Instant film cameras are also typically very easy to use, with simple buttons and minimal features so beginners can jump in with very little experience needed.The camera also includes a self-timer and a tripod mount. You get some control over your images — including flash and double exposure — but this camera gives you much larger square prints. While we haven't had the opportunity to conduct hands-on testing with all of these instant film cameras, we did put in several hours of careful research to ensure that we were curating a selection of the best instant cameras on the market, and specifically sought out options to cater to a variety of styles and budgets.
One of those competitors is Fujifilm, whose Instax cameras tend to rule the market with a whole line of instant film cameras to choose from. Regardless of the brand, however, most instant film cameras work the same way, though there are some variations in terms of creative control (i.e., adjustable exposure, interchangeable lenses, etc.). Also, keep in mind that some instant film cameras run on replaceable batteries, while others are rechargeable via USB cable. The diminutive 1.8- x 2.4-inch Instax Mini prints (costing about 75 cents each) generally achieve a good balance in both color saturation and brightness, and the fill-flash lit faces in outdoor shots pretty well. Colors were just a tad muted compared to some Kodak camera images using its Zink printing tech. Unlike all-analog models (such as the instax mini), the Evo captures digital images that you can preview on the generous 3-inch and slightly tweak — orientation, brightness, and color vividness (with a dreamy "natural" option) — before committing to a print. Fujifilm's mobile app doesn't allow much control of settings, but can send smartphone images to the camera's printer. (Going the other way, you can transfer the Evo's digital images to a computer using the camera's microSD card slot.) Is it actually instant? After taking a photo, we used a timer to see exactly how long it took the photos to fully develop. That's roughly the same time as you would have to wait for Zink or Polaroid to fully develop. But with those cameras, at least you can take additional photos during that time. With the Mini Shot, you have to wait for the printing process to finish. There's an instant film camera for every budget and shooting style, so they can be really fun to play around with, whether you're a casual photographer taking glamor shots of your pets or a seasoned pro seeking a new outlet for your photographic creativity. The small pictures are fun to use for scrapbooking and photo albums, and they allow for a really awesome and creative way to add some personalized decor to any space. (And you don’t need to be a teenage girl to appreciate these mini-sized portraits, either.) These nostalgic cameras are also a fun addition to parties and special celebrations to allow guests to instantly bring home memories in the palms of their hands.
