About this deal

There was a steady flow of Biscuiteers arriving. We had seen Howie and Daz at the beginning of their trek. They had made light work of the pubs of Stowmarket. Postman Tony, John, Steve, Brian and Graham Le Taxi all made one in, along with Mr and Mrs Exford. Examining the interior of the building, you might think it would have been a chapel in its previous life. But I was told that it was a corn exchange. The caravan guitar was brought out to a multitude of cheers. But it was only played for about ten seconds, just to prove that it still works. “This is for those who think this wasn’t going to work. Actually, it’s not too bad. You could park it in a lay-by in Capel Curig. It’s a multi-purpose guitar. You could live in it. You could sit on a Cadbury’s Smash tin and play Scrabble with the family in it, when it’s raining for two weeks.” But here’s one from our set anyway. I’ll be posting more as time allows. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0j_04lE2QzI

Changes are afoot at 6 Music. They seem to be planning various cuts and mergers. HMHB don’t get a lot of airplay to start with. So there probably won’t be much difference.

HMHB’s walk-on music was Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto Number One. This was the first classical album to sell a million copies, according to Tony. There will be a gold disc on a wall somewhere. “We were going to walk on to Abba’s The Way Old Friends Do,” noted Nigel. “But The Hitchers finished with Mamma Mia”. Tony shouted to Nigel that Tchaikovsky was paranoid about his head falling off. “There is no punchline to that?” replied Nigel, “I feel sorry for the blighter.” The show was grand and as ever I had a smile on my face throughout. I think my selections and predictions were fairly wide of the mark but who cares. We were at a wedding reception recently over the water, Hulme Hall. I know The Beatles played there but have Nigel and the band also played there before ? Fascinated

Old Tige- thanks for the beer.I know you turned one down at the show but next time you’re over…and I hope United treat you to a performance as good as the band did. The English lyrics are taken I believe from the Hal David translation (see Shirley Bassey) but I think all the choruses are the “let there be no regrets” rather than “we will have no regrets” (cf Piaf’s “I will have”)? We had a fairly standard journey. Bus into Wakefield, train to Birmingham New Street. Change there for Wolverhampton. We were staying at the Premier Inn nearly next door to the train station. First off, we went for a stroll to search for the venue. On the way, we had our first spotting of a Biscuiteer, being Phil. Having found The Wulfrun, we then took lunch at The Slug And Lettuce. Lo and behold, The Hitchers (tonight’s support band) were sitting at the next table. We talked to Niall who very kindly handed over a set list in advance. Alice: As someone who spent the first 30 years of their existence residing in Haverhill, I’d take polite issue with you regarding the local pronunciation. As a town with a population made up predominately of London overspill and their offspring, the opening ‘H’ is almost always dropped – by far the most common pronunciation is ‘ay-vrill’ (far more ‘London’, far less ‘Fenland drawl’). HMHB and David Bowie have been consistently jostling for first place on my podium since 2014, so early January has been pretty raw for me these last few years. This news goes some way to restoring the balance-though the staggered release dates mean I’m going to have to become one of those people who buy records in multiple formats.Hats off to Wrexham,” said Nigel, referring to their promotion. This was met with a load of booing. I wonder who the locals support instead? Ahead of the Magazine cover, he then said “This next song could be about us, next season. Getting shot by both sides.” I’m not exactly sure who he would have been referring to, when he said “both sides”. Wrexham and…? Crewe? When I Look At My Baby”. One that gives me a nagging feeling I’m missing a reference; Jeff D can no doubt fill in that one. High Ho Wolverhampton, indeed! An all round fine gig. Nice venue, very modern. Roomy, airy, and great sound. A very civilised start and finish time, and a good set list. Karl was in a Mojo Nixon t-shirt. That was a new name to us. We listened to Mojo’s Elvis Is Everywhere. Nigel was in a Trek-Segafredo cycle racing team t-shirt. You would expect him to be a bit more up to date. There is a new sponsor for that team and they are now known as Lidl-Trek.

Having parked up in Llangollen, we went out to locate the venue. First Biscuiteer spotted was Andy, who was on his way to catch a ride on the Llangollen And Corwen Heritage Railway alongside the River Dee. Some Jehovahs Witnesses were maintaining a presence outside the venue entrance. We wondered if they might be trying to blag the support slot at the gig. We would find out later if they were successful. My first thought on hearing the album title was that it could be a play on The Monsanto Years by Neil Young. That’s The HMHB Data Retrieval System updated with Friday’s setlist and all the videos I could find/were sent to me. Let us know of any others – 12 so far.
