About this deal

You'll also have unlimited access to studio workouts, all led by a coach, you can even pair your smartphone or tablet to this bike to see beautiful sights as you follow along with your training session. Resistance Levels– The resistance levels found on a spin bike allow you to control the intensity of the ride. These need to be handy to adjust as you will often look to make adjustments mid-ride. They can be mechanically or manually controlled and there can be anything upwards of 8 levels of resistance. It is worth noting that a bike that has 24 levels of resistance may not provide a tougher ride than a bike with 8 levels of resistance but just means it has more variations between its hardest and easiest setting. Many spin bikes tend to have a dial with no set levels of intensity – this is perfectly normal. Weighing just 15.5kg in total, the F-Bike is lighter than some of its pricier rivals' flywheels alone, which is actually pretty crazy, if you think about it. With a max user weight of 100kg, it's also clearly not going to be the most robust option for some people. What it does offer though, is a lightweight, folding design, letting you easily store it out of the way when not in use. There are plenty of all-singing, all-dancing exercise bikes in this round-up but if you want a solid spinning machine to see you through your sessions, without having to shell out on a monthly subscription, this is the one for you.

However you choose to while away your time on the saddle, you'll also benefit from an LCD monitor to display your workout stats. If you’re in a smaller space and need to shift things around before and after each session you’ll also be pleased to hear it’s got built-in wheels too, making life after a brutal HIIT session a little easier. It is a common misconception that spin bikes are the same as exercise bikes. This is simply not the case and although there are of course many similarities between the two, there are also some key differences. Spin bikes tend to require more effort and force from the user than exercise bikes and they don’t have the same level of versatility as an exercise bike (that often comes loaded with extra gadgets and the ability to change various settings) but they do help you to burn more calories if you really push yourself.

The dial that controls that resistance is nice and responsive – and the resistance level is displayed on the screen on your app. It’s very quiet too, even when spinning at full speed. Apex Rides Membership At the time of writing, there are 150 on-demand sessions available from ten instructors and these run the gamut from 15-minute warm-ups to hour-long leg burners. They cover four levels of difficulty and, as well as straight biking classes, there are sessions that include work with weights, for which there’s a pair of storage hooks beneath the saddle, and off-bike HIIT sessions as well. To make it easier to find the class you’re looking for, you can filter by level, instructor, length, music genre and content (“move” or “metric”).

Enjoy a studio-style experience at home with your very own spin bike

Another noteworthy upgrade over the original is a new rotating 23.8-inch HD screen, which makes it even easier to switch between cycling and floor-based workouts. Apple Health fans will also be thrilled to hear that it plays nice with the Apple Watch too — not only does this conveniently keep your workout stats in one handy place, but you can compare your daily activities with friends and family for that all-important competitive edge. Not all home spinning bikes have transportation wheels, which can make moving it around a real hassle if you're someone who will need to move your bike from storage into your workout space, or from room-to-room.

The centre console is very basic but displays all the key data including time, speed, distance, calories burned and also your pulse rate. The pulse rate sensors are built in to the handles and work effectively. Spin bikes are considered safe from an injury point of view as there is little chance of injury and they do not require any outdoor or road riding which can be more dangerous than stationary cycling in your garage. They can also be used no matter the weather which is just as well for any one using a spin bike in the UK. During the class, a leaderboard on the side of the screen (which you can hide should you so wish) shows how you rank compared with other people who have taken the class. This is based on Apex points, earned throughout the class depending on your effort. It’s another way to motivate yourself if you happen to be competitive, like me. Naturally, you can also view home workout statistics and metrics on its front-mounted computer, with time, distance, speed, pulse and calories all monitored, along with support for the Peleton Digital, Bitgym and Aaptiv apps.

Now that your bike is fully assembled, it’s time to learn how to set up a spin bike and fit it to your body so you can be comfortable during your workouts and avoid annoying pains and aches. How to Adjust Your Seat It’s also worth noting that the trainers are British spin instructors from the boutique Boom Cycle studio in London, which may be more palatable to those who find Peloton's earnest instructors and affirmations a bit cheesy. However, Apex would be more suited to class cyclists and spin fanatics than to those looking for indoor performance training. There are no options for simulated outdoor rides (yet), nor is there much scope for free-riding. You can simply create your own interval workout and go at it solo on a spinning bike, but it’s much easier to summon and maintain the motivation to push through a HIIT class when you have an instructor leading you through it, whether that’s through a prerecorded or live session.

However, more expensive bikes offer much more information, including heart rate monitoring and the the ability to set goals based on distance travelled. And speaking of music, there’s a vast choice of playlists on offer too. These can be filtered by genre, instructor, music taste, time and level. I loved the Lionel Richie Mix (no, really) and at the end of a long day the Pedal Party was great fun too. For example, while spin bikes that use electromagnetic resistance are closer to the ones you'll see in the gym, they're also more expensive than exercise bikes that rely on friction and cable resistance. It’s been dubbed as the UK’s answer to Peloton, but the Apex Smart Bike is in a category of its own. It’s a (slightly) less expensive connected exercise bike, but the build quality is similar to that of Peloton. The length of the IC400 is pretty much the same as the 300 with a total length of 120cm when fully adjusted. The maximum height is greater with a total maximum height of 141.5cm and a slightly greater width of 54cm. These different dimensions don’t really impact on the usability of the bike and it is just as well suited to users of all heights just like the IC300. One of the key differences is that the 400 sports a gel seat cover which provides extra comfort to the already well padded saddle. There is also the addition of SDP compatible pedals which means you can use dedicated cycling shoes to clip in if you wish. This is a significant upgrade over the IC300 and although not all users will appreciate this upgrade it will make a big difference to dedicated spin cycle and road/mountain bike enthusiasts. When it comes to the pedals you can opt for the upgraded dual side pedals or the toe clip pedals. Either options work well and it is more a matter of personal preference whether you want to go for the double option. Pros: Spin classes and floor workouts in one; improved A/V; unrivalled content; Auto-Follow; Apple Watch GymKit compatibility For example, cycle as hard as you can on a higher resistance for two minutes, then cycle at a more relaxed pace for five minutes. Alternate for however long you've allocated to that workout. If your cardio fitness is already high, try equal two minute intervals of high and low intensity. What muscles do an exercise bike work?
