Whereas some chainsets feature a aluminium axle in a 30mm diameter, Shimano uses a steel axle with a 24mm diameter across the board. Definitely agree with this; the 50/34 and 11-34 combination does give you some good winching gears but a sub-compact would be what i'd go for on my tripster if it were available.

If you wanted to use an 11-34 cassette, as well as buying the relevant cassette, you would need to buy a compatible rear derailleur. In this example, it would be an Ultegra R8050-GS or 105 R7000-GS rear derailleur. The GS denotes that these are ‘medium cage’ derailleurs. The same rule applies to Shimano Di2 derailleurs. You’ll also have to alter the position of your front mech and get yourself a new chain (or at least shorten your existing chain). As a result, the RD-R7100 rear derailleur is compatible with 11-34 and 11-36t Shimano HG cassettes.Say you have 50-tooth and 34-tooth chainrings: the difference between the large one and the small one (50 minus 34) is 16 teeth. And say your bike is fitted with an 11-28T cassette: the difference between the large one and the small one (28 minus 11) is 17 teeth. Add them together and you get a total difference (16 plus 17) of 33 teeth. we need to be clear what we mean when we write 'gears': do we mean cog and chainring teeth (11-12-13 &c and 52-39 &c)? Cog & chainring combinations (52x13)? 11sp vs 10sp? Gear sequence (1st to 22nd)? Gear relationship (higher/lower; highest/lowest)? Cog number on cassette (1-11)? Gear ratios (1:1, 2.74:1)? Gear inches (30–135")? Metres development (4.56)? 'Gain'? Speed at rpm? Or the whole system (derailleurs, chain, cassette, [internal hub] chainrings)?

Shimano usually updates each groupset every three years. The latest version of Shimano 105 is called R7000 (the disc brakes are R7020) and the most up to date Ultegra is R8000 (the disc brakes are R8020, the Di2 is R8050 and Di2 with hydraulic disc brakes is R8070). If you are specifically using a Shimano HG freehub, you need to consider how wide the cassette you are buying is. Road wheels have slightly wider freehubs than MTB ones – by 1.85mm – and 11-speed Shimano HG road cassettes are slightly wider than 8- or 9-speed ones, again by 1.85mm.The differences are mainly down to materials used, and because of this 105 components are a little heavier. The idea set up would be to have either 105 in the front and Ultegra in the rear, like my bike, or go whole hog and get the DA in the rear, personally I don't see any need for DA. If you use DA 9000 cables on even a full 105 bike and did a blind test ride you would think you were riding on DA because the DA cables are better than standard Shimano cables. A 1:1 exchnage low end gear is really nice for 700x25c in mountains - however it doesnt really cut it if yu add gravel and 700x45c tyres.
