About this deal

Students were encouraged to ‘drop everything and read’ across the curriculum throughout the day and to donate a book to the library. Librarian and teacher Yasmine Choudry said: “It was an affirmation of the students’ commitment, love of books, of reading, writing and wanting to celebrate literature. It was a good day, both busy and lovely.” It’s World Book Day this week and what better way to celebrate, than with a super easy, sweet as candy bake. Little Button absolutely ADORES Julia Donaldson, so we fashioned this cake around the very naughty Highway Rat who steals and collects up all the travellers’ goodies to eat for himself. Heat the oven to 180°C/fan160°C/gas 4. Lightly oil and fully line 3 x 23cm sandwich tins (see tip) with baking paper and set aside.

It’s World Book Day you guys, and being an author, this day holds a very special place in my heart. Books can help start interesting conversations across different generations and I have personally seen that books bring people together. Whether it’s to discuss a topic or to spend an afternoon baking from that cookbook on your book shelf, books have the capability of making a dull day seem brighter. On this World Book Day, I want to talk to you about my two books, what’s next in store as well as share a beautiful recipe from my book, Desserts for Every Mood. Distribute the batter equally into the four cake pans. Bake for 30 minutes, or until a skewer inserted in the centre of the cake comes out clean. Our Share a Story Live Events will encourage even more children to get involved in reading for pleasure, so be sure to save the date and tune in. Students also took part in a sponsored readathon to raise money for Read for Good, a charity that makes sure children in hospitals have books and a sale of new and pre-loved books was held. Wondering about more egg substitutes? There is an entire blog post dedicated to that and I know it will give you a better understanding of the entire thing!Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting– I know you must be thinking, Chocolate- Cream Cheese? Frosting? Is that even a thing? I saw yes! Now since most of the traditional chocolate cakes use a chocolate ganache, I wanted to break free from that stereotype and pair the cake with a tangy, chocolatey cream cheese frosting. The texture this frosting gave to this cake is out of the world! I recommend you definitely make this frosting for the chocolate mango cake and don’t skip it. There are SO many ways you can celebrate World Book Day. One of our favourite nods to the occasion is to bake up a storm (or a bit of a mess in my case). It’s always so much fun as anything goes, and you can let your imaginations run completely wild! Some students brought their cakes in on the school bus and one even dropped his twice, but it was still entered. All 38 students were rewarded with a special headteacher’s breakfast and chocolate and the winners got book tokens. The cost of living crisis continues to affect every household across the UK and when bills are mounting and the cost of feeding the family has doubled, yet another dress up day at school is something we could surely all do without!?

Mr Stink is another Walliams favourite. All you need is some old clothes, a coat that has seen better days and a 'Mr Stink for Prime Minister' handmade sign. Give me your pastries and puddings! Give me your chocolate and cake! For I am the Rat of the Highway….. And whatever I want I take.” – Highway Rat by Julia Donaldson Preheat your oven to 180C/gas mark 4. We have a fan assisted oven and baking at just slightly over 160C worked at treat. Amazing, fantastic cakes were everywhere on Friday 3rd March to celebrate World Book Day (which was on Thusday 2nd). Inspiration came from authors such as Julia Donaldson, Dr Seuss, Jacqueline Wilson, David Walliams, J.K.Rowling and Anthony Horowitz.Where's Wally makes an appearance every year. All you need is a red and white stripy top and some glasses but if you don't have those items you could always create your own by drawing red stripes on to an old white t-shirt with a felt tip and use facepaint or an eyeliner to draw the glasses on. I also wanted to take this opportunity to tell you guys that I am working on not one, but TWO new books! Besides the recipe book that you guys already know about, I am also working on a baking book for children. While I cannot share all the info about this book yet, I am incredibly excited to work on something for kids. This book is an encouragement for kids- girls or boys, to get in the kitchen and bake! When I started baking, not a lot of people looked at baking as a viable career option and this stereotype was mostly prevalent for boys. Now when I see young kids showing so much interest being in the kitchen and baking, it makes me feel so happy because this is the kind of changes that this world needs! I hope with this book, I’ll be able to encourage more kids to explore their interest in baking and also get more parents to be supportive if their child wants to peruse baking as a hobby or career. Elements of Chocolate Mango Cake This one is possibly the easiest on to pull off simply pop some underpants over the top of your clothes, preferably white or light in colour and you've got yourself Captain Underpants! Sophie from The BFG Generously top one layer of chocolate cake with the chocolate cream cheese frosting. Place another cake layer on top of it and repeat the process until all the layers are done. Remember to frost the outside of the cake as well.

I find baking replaces any negativity and helps me have a more positive attitude. It also gives me confidence as well. There were certificates for the winners and the runners-up (2nd and 3rd places in each year group) and prizes of books for the first place winners. The overall winners also won a bake off apron. A big 'Thank You' to FORAS members for organising the event and well done to everyone who took part - there were about 90 cakes altogether and they were sold after school to raise funds for FORAS. We also shared updates about the very exciting new projects we have coming up: Share a Story Corner and World Book Day Book Club! Our campaign plan for the upcoming years will aim to reach more children that ever before. We want to make sure every child has access to books, and ourupcoming events – all digital for the year ahead – will help children enjoy reading for pleasure as a life-long habit. For the sponge, heat 100ml of the milk with the chocolate in a bowl set over a pan of barely simmering water (don’t let the water touch the bowl), stirring occasionally, until the chocolate has melted. Cool slightly.

We watched a digital performance of Macbeth and saw two productions. One was a modernised version by the Royal Shakespeare Company which I preferred and found it more engaging.” Sometimes the best ideas are the most simplest. Here are a few lovely World Book Day recipe ideas to get you started. After the outbreak of war in September 1939, food became scarce and rationing was introduced in Britain in January 1940. Certain foods such as butter, bacon, and sugar, were restricted which meant people could only buy a limited amount to ensure there was enough to go around.
