About this deal

Lowen’s growing attraction to the grieving husband, Jeremy Crawford, prompts her to make irreversible choices until another truth comes to light. But now the question remains: which truth is the lie? Verity Book Review It’s as twisted as twisted can be – more so because Verity’s presence is no longer confined to the past. To Lowen’s horror, Verity seems to be very much aware and not so immobilized. Verity’s eyes follow Lowen at times, Verity’s son waves at his mother who was standing at the window, and Lowen’s startled by Verity’s appearance at the top of the stairs when she and Jeremy are having sex. There are two things that kind of bothered me, but with me, storytelling is everything. And this book had it in spades. I've pulled up this review and tried to make the words come for a couple of days now, but every time I try to write the words all that comes to mind is WTF Colleen?! Obviously we were warned going in that this one would but much different than her other novels, but she didn't tell us that it would be so compulsive and I wouldn't be able to live my life while reading it. How dare she?? But seriously, this book was so delicious in a seriously twisted way, and I feel slightly guilty admitting that I loved Verity so much due to its dark and disturbing nature. A woman knows if she wants to keep a man forever, she has to act like she could get over him in a day.

Told in alternating chapters, Lowen’s account of the present and Verity’s account of the events leading up to the present paint a dark, uncomfortable picture of their intermingled narratives. But the discomfort a reader may feel is second to the intrigue that Hoover’s skillful writing evokes.

That is the only parallel to her usual works as the book ends with an ending which is not quite really an ending. You have room to question it. Ask yourself how the story could continue and with this book, it can drive you insane. The infamous manuscript captures Verity’s perspective of her life, her connection to Jeremy, her motivations for her children – and it’s horrifying to the level of disgust. But then again, we were warned this would happen: The same love and attention Colleen Hoover dedicated to Lowen is also given to both Jeremy and Verity, although we naturally mostly get acquainted with the latter through her writing and stories told by others. When it becomes increasingly clear both of them might very well be despicable human beings, they only become more absorbing due to the new internal vistas of theirs we get to witness.

Honestly, if you like the idea of a mystery-thriller romance novel, then this book is probably a pretty solid iteration of that type of book, especially if you are someone who would enjoy the creepy and suspenseful atmosphere of the book. Lowen "forgiving" or "justifying" Jeremy's double murder attempts was brutal. C'mon. Not during women's history month. Lowen Ashleigh is an authoress whose struggles don’t know any bounds. Additionally, Lowen doesn’t exactly have a home. Lowen barely has any money to get by each month. She is indebted and is as close to eviction as she is to breaking down. Additionally, Lowen’s mother very recently died. She is regarded as a novelist whose talent is very high, but Lowen isn’t exactly the most charming in terms of marketing her works. This is one of the reasons why her works aren’t as loved as other less capable writers. I cannot believe this is Colleen Hoover's first thriller. Reading this feels like watching a master at their craft, setting the bar higher than I ever thought possible. This story is so astonishing and unsettling and completely original. It will stay with me for a long time. If you don't know the plot: Lowen, a struggling writer, is hired by Jeremy to finish his wife Verity's body of work after an accident leaves her unable to finish. Lowen finds an autobiography that reveals all sorts of juicy drama and murders, but decides to just have sex with Jeremy instead of do much about it until she can find a way to ensure Verity's story will get him to run away with her instead. Ill-advised, Lowen, ill-advised. Bonus points if you just pretend this is someone finishing Sue Grafton's alphabet series. Would have preferred that, honestly.

So many books advertise as suspenseful thrillers, but hardly any of them cause my heart to blip even a little. (I know, I'm a stone cold reader.) But this book! There is such a deliciously creepy atmosphere that permeates throughout and it got me good. I'll admit to heart palpitations, cold clammy hands, and being startled at the smallest noises. And as the story progresses and we find out more and more, the tension ratchets up to almost unbearable levels.
