About this deal

Having been involved in some great TWD events over the last year such as Conflict, and designed the scenarios used in the two largest AOW events so far (Winter’s End & Trial By Fire), this guest blog is going to focus on some of the considerations you might have if you want to devise your own scenarios too. Perhaps I was subconsciously surfing the zombie zeitgeist. I buy a zombie themed game and end up playing it 28 Days Later!!

All Survivors start with three health and if you want to increase that, you’ll need to add some extra points. The maximum is eight health points, which costs a whopping 20 points! We’re opting for a fairly decent five health points, which costs an extra five points. This means we’re currently sitting on a total of 35 points. There is no doubting that Negan made a brilliant baddie, and there were some terrific stories and themes with the Whisperers, the Kingdom and Hilltop. For me, the Walking Dead was at its best in Atlanta, Woodbury, Terminus and in the prison, and I can’t wait to play that out on the table.

How to Play The Walking Dead Call To Arms?

So, the world ended, the game ended. What happens next? Well for me, I have literally hundreds more models to paint (I have a lot of duplicates, but a lot of characters to do, including Lee and Clementine from The Walking Dead video game that was fantastic). The core gameplay revolves around each player taking turns to activate their miniatures and perform various actions with them. The player who holds initiative starts and activates one model. This model can perform two actions from a small list of options (move, shoot, search, hide, etc) and then the other player does the same with a model. Players take it in turns like this until all of the survivor models have had their turn. Once all of the survivor models have had their go then the game turn moves into the ‘Event Phase’. Loads of extra characters are also available as booster sets, so you don’t have to keep playing with the same models from the starter box set. There is a points system through the rules which means that you can play with bigger groups of survivors and keep the teams balanced against each other as every character and weapon has a points value. A: The core game will have a single scenario – a multi-purpose player vs player setup. We will follow that up with the narrative expansions, which will have as many scenarios as are required to tell the story from the comics. Atlanta currently has 6, and we’re planning roughly the same number again to tell the next part of the story, from leaving Atlanta, to the farm, to reaching the prison. There will be more as we go through the story. Custom expansions are created by myself and "Mantic's The Walking Dead - Finishing the Story" Facebook Group.

A: Yes, they are standard industry sizes – 3.5″ x 2.5″ for event cards, and half that size for equipment. You’ll need to assign your Survivor a nerve rating and some health. The Nerve rating is how easily they’ll panic during the game. Survivors all start at Low but if you want to increase that to Medium or High, it’ll cost five points or 15 points, respectively. We’re going to opt for Medium. If a walker gets a critical hit result against a survivor and wins the combat then the survivor has been ‘Bitten’ and this can lead to that model eventually turning into a walker later in the game!Example scenarios will be included in the Organised Play kit but why wait… why not see what you can do and share it in the Walking Dead Fanatics Facebook group?

The box also gives you some cardboard terrain, which is fantastic as the cost and amount of effort you need to start playing is on a par with a board game. Everything you need to get a taste of the game is included. This includes cardboard templates and, crucial to gameplay, cardboard terrain.

Don't miss a Skybound update!

How did zombies go from being an extremely niche form of horror to being pop culture mainstream? up there with teenage mutant turtles and twerking. There is even a skittles television advert featuring a zombie high school romance scene for heaven’s sake. At this point we are so invested in the idea of zombies it feels like a disappointment that the apocalypse that looks set to fall upon is so mundane. The miniatures in the set are, on the whole, excellent and are a joy to paint, the detail in the Walkers is extremely good and these characters show a wide range of sculpts, from zombie waitresses to old men. The sculpts for the human characters don’t seem to be as refined, and whilst clothing details are great, a couple of their heads seem a little bulky and large. The Walking Dead can be credited for revitalising the zombie genre when it appeared first as a celebrated comic and then as the long-running TV show reusing characters and recognisable narratives from the comic. The continuing narrative, focusing on a central group of survivors from the Atlanta area of the States, challenged what we would expect; here the zombies, or Walkers to those familiar with the mythos, were not villains here. Instead the regular challenges facing the survivors is the regular discovery of other groups of survivors willing to do anything to survive and scavenge the last remaining resources of food and firearms. So, many months on from playing my first game and many, many games later I feel I am finally ‘qualified’ to write this The Walking Dead All Out War game review. Hope you enjoy it… What’s in the box? Players alternate moving their figures using the bundled range ruler, choosing to sneak or run. As you might expect, running causes noise, which attracts unoccupied walkers within a set distance.
