About this deal

There are unseen sexual tensions between him and Nessa; they have had several one-night-stands (one of which produced their son), and in some ways, he seems to fancy Nessa. He always seems a bit gutted when she and Dave start dating, especially as he seems to be acting like Baby Neil's father.

Dirtbox ( Andrew Knott) – A friend of Gavin and Smithy's. He seems to be somewhat short tempered and snappy. In the 2019 Christmas special Smithy states that Dirtbox is recently divorced. Griff ( Alan David) – friend of Bryn and Doris. He attended Gavin and Stacey's wedding with Doris in Series 1.Nessa: “That depends. This reminds me of a very similar situation I was in with my second husband, Clive. I was faced with a dilemma, whether to lie, or not to lie, and I chose to tell the truth.” Rob Brydon’s also said it’s very impressive and Sheridan Smith gave it a like.” You were Nessa? How did you decide who would take each role? OH! Simply put, Nessa IS Gavin and Stacey. Ruth Jones’ writing is perfect, her characterisation golden. I love that the show just gets more and more surreal with Nessa’s random anecdotes and history. Her life could have 80 million spin-offs and all would be fascinating. Noel from Hear’Say and John Prescott at her and Dave’s wedding will never not be funny. Pam He loves Gavin's family more than his own who are rarely seen on the show. His sister is Rudi Smith and his mum is Catherine Smith. He is always seen around Gavin's house. But once Dave and Nessa's wedding day arrives (Smithy is going to look after Baby Neil until they return from their honeymoon), but Smithy decides to stop the wedding. He reveals that Nessa was only marrying Dave because it was an easy option and because she felt that Smithy wasn't around enough to support her and Baby Neil. And six months later he has migrated to Barry and has grown a liking to Nessa but it likely or unlikely they're a couple.

Oh my Christ! If Pam isn’t ranking at the top of your Gavin and Stacey characters tier list, you and me are going to fall out today Michael! Every note of Pam is perfect, and Alison Steadman makes her legendary in every scene. There are too many funny moments to name, but Three Steaks Pam (viz a viz chips) is probs my favourite. I love when she gets sayings wrong (No way, blasé) and I love when she despises Smithy’s mum. She’s a gay icon. Related stories recommended by this writer: The all-star cast continues, with Would I Lie to You? presenter Rob Brydon playing Stacey's uncle Bryn. Fat No More Pat – Pam's friend from her fencing class. She was mentioned when Pam asked Stacey if she would like to come along in Pat's absence. Most of the obvious set-piece gags were left behind this week in favour of much more subtle humour, and rightly so. I had a good chortle at Dave Coaches' choice of wedding poem – WH Auden's Funeral Blues – but my biggest laugh was saved for the music played over the wedding montage. Anyone who sat and cried that day in 1987 when Scott and Charlene got married in Neighbours to Angry Anderson's Suddenly will have felt a special moment of nostalgia; everyone else will have been left wondering what on earth that crappy ballad was. This week's Big QuestionsDavid "Dave Coaches" Lloyd Gooch ( Steffan Rhodri) – Coach driver in Barry and Nessa's fiancé, after they got engaged in the Christmas special. Aspersions are cast regarding his sexual health in Series 1, although it is revealed in Series 2 that he has been to "the clinic". He is the only person, other than Bryn and Jason, who knows what happened on the fishing trip, after Bryn told him to get the matter off his chest. His relationship with Nessa results in both Bryn and Jason being incredibly nervous about him telling their friends what happened, although he makes it very clear to Bryn he wouldn't tell anyone about it. He also has his own company named Dave's Coaches. He often shows jealousy towards Smithy for being the father of Nessa's child. Smithy gets jealous of him for always spending time with his son and treating him like his own. In the final episode he leaves Nessa at the altar as he doesn't believe she loves him. Nessa's father mentions him having "blood on his hands", but says he was joking, knowing that "nothing was proven". Dave often has a strained relationship with the other characters, and has publicly had angry exchanges with Bryn, Smithy and Pete, who punched Dave in the face after he made an uncharitable remark about his wife, Dawn.

Are you telling me that the only (openly) gay man we get on Gav and Stace is this boring? Do me a favour. Couldn’t care less tier Owain Hughes After all, lots of shows have nice ideas and good actors, but very few of them ignite the nation’s interest to such a degree that two characters get to make a number one single with Tom Jones, while another gets to coach the England football team in a Comic Relief sketch. This is a show that almost everybody seemed to love, and I think a big part of that is the human drama at its core. In Series 1, Smithy thinks that Gavin should not get his hopes up when they are going to meet Stacey, and believes that she might not turn up. And despite the fact that he did not want to go with Gavin, he rather enjoys himself when he is there. He and Nessa have the first of four One Night Stands, which occurred in the en-suite of the hotel room, and involved a toilet brush. Smithy: “I’ve been thinking about ending it all to be honest, suicide…big time. How many Nurofen would I need to finish me off?” Pam’s dietary requirements] “This morning, before you arrived, I became a vegetarian. Yeah, veggie, Out of interest, any one of you vegetarians? I mean, not that it makes any difference to me either way. I mean, we’re all adults. But, I would ask you to respect my views. And all the little animals who’ve been needlessly murdered in the name of Western Civilised greed.” (Photo: BBC)Bryn: “It is, Gavin, it is, provided you remember the one golden rule, and I’ll tell you what, it took me a while to get my head round it. What it is, you have to start everything with ‘w-w-w-dot’. And the best thing to do is to think of something to help remind you, like with me now, I think of ‘whiskey with water’ which was my brother – God rest his soul – my brother’s favourite drink. But it could be anything. I mean, you could say… come on, three w’s. Um… ‘women… wearing wings’. No, don’t say that, that’s a terrible one.” Bryn: “Oh… Ah… Now that is a thought. Yes. Yes. Stacey, please inform the Shipmans that I accept their offer and very much look forward to meeting them.” (Photo: BBC) A big nope from me. Introduced as Smithy’s new girlfriend in the 2019 Christmas special, no one’s supposed to like Sonia anyway. But I don’t think she even succeeds on that level… She’s just pointless. This special should have just had Smithy and Nessa together, or at least both single and they get together over the course of the special. Sonia enters the game too late. Flop. Jason

Once the wedding day has arrived, he has made a Speech that he claims is comedy gold. However, when it comes to the actual speech, he cannot complete the speech as he breaks down in tears. Later on, Nessa states that she has something to tell him, but decides it is nothing.

You were Nessa? How did you decide who would take each role?

Doris: “She lives for the day she can change her name from West, what with all the connotations and what have you, and what does she become? A Shipman.”
