The 56mm f1.4 is the longest of the trio and gives you an equivalent focal length of 84mm, making it particularly ideal for portrait photography. If you’re a DX user, then the nearest you’ll get to this focal length from a proprietary prime lens is the Nikkor DX 24mm f/1.7 lens, or, you might instead use something like the Nikkor Z DX 50-250mm f/4.5-6.3 VR lens or the Nikkor Z DX 18-140mm f/3.5-6.3 VR lens. Alternatively, you might consider mounting the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 S lens, which would give you an equivalent of 75mm on your APS-C camera, but will cost you a little bit more, and is quite a lot larger than the Sigma 56mm lens. The lens benefits from an open aperture of F1.4 to achieve sufficient amount of bokeh and admirable brightness even with APS-C size cameras which tend to have smaller bokeh effects compared to 35mm full size systems. Its compact and lightweight body is perfect for daily use, capable of capturing various scenes ranging from portraits to snapshots, as well as night view.
The brass mount combines high precision with rugged construction. Its treated surfaces and enhanced strength contribute to the exceptional durability of the lens. Chromatic aberrations, typically seen as purple or blue fringes along contrasty edges, can be detected in a few of our sample shots, but it's not overly prevalent or obvious. Chromatic aberrations were also traced along high-contrast edges at f/1.4 when in-camera corrections were turned off. Some mild traces of purple and green fringes of colour were still obvious in shots where the built-in lens profile was applied, so you may find yourself applying some additional manual correction, just as I did. The Sigma 56mm F1.4 DC DN C lens has a fairly wide focus ring. There are no hard stops at both ends of the range, making it more difficult to set focus at infinity. Polariser users should be pleased that the 55mm filter thread doesn't rotate on focus. The Sigma 56mm F1.4 DC DN is touted as a fast portrait prime for Fujifilm’s APS-C X-mount cameras. Portraiture isn’t why I bought the Sigma – I bought it for travel photography. Despite the focal length being an 85mm full-frame equivalent, it’s still a useful focal length with an incredible aperture that can come in handy for travel photography.
A study of our Image Engineering Tests reveals the lens is sharper in the centre than at the edge throughout the aperture range. Centre sharpness (shown by the solid red line) improves considerably by stopping it down from its maximum aperture to f/2 and peaks between f/2.8 and f/4. Corner sharpness (shown by the dotted red line) doesn’t reach the same level as centre sharpness, but does steadily improve from f/1.4 to f/5.6. For the best edge-to-edge sharpness it should be used around f/5.6-f/6.3. Diffraction has the affect of softening images at f/16. As I expected, the barrel has a nice large rubberized focus ring that gives the lens a nice grippy and durable feel.
Ease of Use
There is a slight vignetting at the wider apertures, which is to be expected, and this clears by the time you reach f/4. Incidentally, if you shoot JPEG, the in-camera corrections remove this completely at f/2.8. The image below shows the in-camera correction at f/2, which although still there, is very subtle. I found the sweet spot of the lens to be between f/5.6 and f/8, so I spent the majority of the time shooting there. Even at the smaller apertures, the lens performed admirably. I'll (grudgingly) concede those points. And anyway, it's not the ex-railway infrastructure itself that's so good for photography: it's the fact that it's full of ambling tourists and relaxing New Yorkers taking a break from the city's hubbub, such that they're much more amenable to being photographed by slightly nervous Brits wielding camera gear. This is the second Sigma lens I've had the opportunity to test out and for the four weeks, I never removed it from the Fuji X-T5, opting simply to see if it performed well in every situation it was presented with. It was great in low light thanks to the f/1.4 aperture and even in bright sunlight, it didn't suffer from lens flare.
