About this deal

This handy tool is essentially two converter tools in one. It will, as the name suggests, convert a modern, Arabic-based numeral that we use today into an ancient Roman numeral. Roman numerals, with their unique numerical notation, encapsulate the genius of ancient civilizations. They serve as a testament to Rome's vast influence on various domains, from architecture to the very method of counting we employ. The development of the numeric symbols may have been closely related, originally, to the shape of the hand: I for a single finger, V for the whole hand outstretched, X for both hands in the same manner. Amongst all of the letters and numbers currently swirling around your head as you try and make sense of this ancient numbering system, you may or may not have noticed that nowhere has there been a mention of zero. Aczel, Amir D. 2015. Finding Zero: A Mathematician's Odyssey to Uncover the Origins of Numbers. 1st edition. New York: Palgrave Macmillan.

Adkins, Lesley; Adkins, Roy A (2004). Handbook to life in ancient Rome (2ed.). Facts On File. p.270. ISBN 0-8160-5026-0.The Roman number system is based on seven letters or symbols: I, V, X, L, C, D, and M. These symbols represent the values 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, 500, and 1000, respectively. For easier and faster calculations, you can memorize 4 as IV, 9 as IX, 40 as XL, 90 as XC, 400 as CD, and 900 as CM. You can convert numbers like 2, 3, 20, and 30 by adding two or three symbols that are the same (e.g., X + X + X = 30). And for numbers like 6, 7, 8, 17, and 46, you can convert them by adding smaller symbols followed by larger symbols (e.g., V + III = 5 + 3 = 8, X + V + II = 10 + 5 + 2 = 17, and XL + V + I = 40 + 5 + 1 = 46). Della Mirandola, Pico (1486). Conclusiones sive Theses DCCCC[ Conclusions, or 900 Theses] (in Latin). RIB 2171. Building Inscription of the Second and Twentieth Legions". Roman Inscriptions in Britain . Retrieved 9 November 2020. Certain romance-speaking countries use Roman numerals to designate assemblies of their national legislatures. For instance, the composition of the Italian Parliament from 2018 to 2022 (elected in the 2018 Italian general election) is called the XVIII Legislature of the Italian Republic (or more commonly the "XVIII Legislature").

One justification for the existence of pre-combined numbers is to facilitate the setting of multiple-letter numbers (such as VIII) on a single horizontal line in Asian vertical text. The Unicode standard, however, includes special Roman numeral code points for compatibility only, stating that "[f]or most purposes, it is preferable to compose the Roman numerals from sequences of the appropriate Latin letters". [76]However, you may find that certain numbers aren't written as you would expect, and why aren't big numbers written as an extremely long line of letters? More detailed explanation can be found underneath the chart.

The vinculum is a horizontal line used in mathematics above or below a value to indicate a certain purpose, such as a grouping or repeating decimal value. In modern day math it is often replaced by the use of parentheses. Gordon, Arthur E. (1983). Illustrated Introduction to Latin Epigraphy. University of California Press. p.44. ISBN 9780520038981 . Retrieved 3 October 2015.The number zero does not have its own Roman numeral. At about 725, Bede or one of his colleagues used the letter N, the abbreviation (short form) of nihil (the Latin word for " nothing"). [3] Fractions [ change | change source ] A semis ( S) coin.
