About this deal

At 512KB I/O Size and larger, RAID 0 and RAID 10 achieved right around 225-230 MB/sec write and 245 MB/sec read, with 4KB at about 22 MB/sec write and 25 MB/sec read. JBOD, which effectively is single drive speed at 64KB and above hovered around 175 MB/sec write and read speed, with 4K at about 25 MB/sec for both read and write.

I had this same issue (30MB/s read and write speeds) and resolved it by uninstalling the USB drivers, rebooting my Win 10 PC, and allowing the system to reinstall the drivers. Now data transfers are around 200MB/s. I really don't think it has anything to do with supposed poor performance by the TR-004. The box works just fine, as advertised. Sometimes USB drivers need to be reinstalled and reinitialized, particularly when different devices (such as USB Headphones or a USB Mouse) are exchanged for another device (such as a mass storage device). in regards to spindown, afaik, if you power off the nas, this would automatically put the connected tr-004 into a spindown state if i read this correctly. this feature was mentioned on reddit if not mistaken. The TR-004U can only be used as an individual storage pool or volume on the NAS. Its storage pool/volume cannot be combined into the connected NAS. NAS applications cannot be installed on the TR-004U. When I'm testing over network, I'm using a 8GB and a 33GB .mkv file, copying to/from NAS to my PC's Samsung 960 EVO to make sure the drive in my PC is not skewing results. Without going too much into the software, it has some good basic functionality. It allows offers RAID setup, individual drive information including S.M.A.R.T. values direct from the drives, which you can't do with other utilities in Windows or on MacOS when connected to the TR-004. Simple status for each drive is also displayed like "GOOD" and associated drive bay also highlighted green if there's no issues. Firmware can also be updated through this app as well. So far mine came with the latest 1.004. OR alternatively you can set it up as a raid5 on standalone mode using the windows qnap utility app that can create the raid5 without using qts. I believe that you can still connect this to the QNAP and use as an external USB. But whenever you want to manage it, you need to connect to a windows pc and use the qnap utility app for tr-004 i presume. There are three drives in the TS-332X in RAID-5 but writes to those work great - ~300MB/s from PC to NAS. It seems only the TR-004 is affected.

Use Storage & Snapshots Manager to configure the TR-004 as a storage expansion unit for your QNAP NAS. In addition to RAID configuration, the NAS expansion storage mode supports various NAS functions, including storage pools and snapshots. By choosing external storage mode, you can use the TR-004 as a DAS.

but in it was clearly stated for the tr-004, that it will AUTO spindown if you power off the nas if it's connected to the NAS directly via usb. The TR-004 is a nifty little device that allows for users to set a RAID mode for the 4-bay device with DIP switches on the unit, or through software on their Windows or MAC machines. It claims to have a USB 3.2 gen 1 over USB C port, and is designed as a standalone DAS either for added storage to a QNAP NAS, but also as a standalone DAS for a Windows, Mac, or Linux PC. Individual, JBOD, hardware RAID 0/1/5/10, Software CTRL (Software control mode is for use with QNAP NAS and Windows/macOS utility) Warning: Using unsupported modules may degrade performance, cause errors, or prevent the operating system from starting. Second, when I perform a write operation against the drive, while I perform a read operation, the speed of the read drops to ~40MB/s while the write is around ~30-40MB/s. Seems like a pretty severe penalty that shouldn't be the case.
