About this deal

Philips’ video processing tech has also improved and looks cleaner and crisper than on any previous Philips OLED. Upscaling quality for 720p and 1080p content is decent so long as the sharpness controls aren’t dialled up too high – doing so can result in unwanted ringing and visual noise. Note that pixel shifting, an automatic function that reduces the risk of OLED burn-in, still can’t be disabled on the Philips 805. However, the horizontal leeway (the distance that the video frame moves) has been halved so it likely won’t be an issue for most users. The rest of the colour palette is lifelike and convincing – and, to be absolutely blunt, much better judged and much less aggressive than we’ve become used to from Philips. There’s still intensity of tone when needs be, of course, but when it’s describing skin-tones (in particular) the 55OLED807 is more lifelike and convincing than the model it replaces. And this is true even if you’re using one of the more, um, vivid picture presets. Approximate width of the display. If the manufacturer does not provide such information, the width is calculated from the diagonal and the aspect ratio.

We manually switch to Dolby Vision Bright and the image is more in line with what we’d expect from the content in terms of brightness and colours, but still trumps the LG CX for punch and sharpness. Philips hasn’t always been the best in this area, compared with the competition, but it’s starting to come close more recently. It’s a little complicated to get the desired result, thanks to one too many options to choose from, but overall we liked the results from the Movie setting, which helped to smooth out a judder-y fight scene in Squid Games episode 1. Philips’ new Pure Cinema Motion is also worth a look, but it looked overly smooth to us on occasion, and overall less natural. At the bottom of the range is the 7506. It boasts a better specification than the 7906 in a few respects, evident by the P5 Perfect Engine processor, DTS Play-Fi, as well as HDMI 2.1 support in VRR, eARC and ALLM.

The maximum number of colors, which the display is able to reproduce, depends on the type of the panel in use and color enhancing technologies like FRC. The new Fast Motion Clarity feature has only been announced for the OLED 800 series, but it serves to avoid the motion blurring effect for a gradual transition from one image to the next. Anti burn-in solution on more OLEDs The TV also has the anti-burn that detects logos/static content onscreen to reduce the brightness of those static elements. There’s also DTS Play-Fi too, offering multi-room and High-Res music compatibility, and the set’s audio is provided by a Bowers & Wilkins 3.1.2 Atmos sound system.

The 8506 series is Philips’ affordable range of TVs aimed at the mainstream buyer. They’re available in many sizes and carry some of the premium features seen in the TVs above. As an Android TV, Chromecast functionality comes as standard, so you can fling content from your phone to your TV with wanton abandon. Google Assistant is also available for voice assistance – you can use it to adjust your TV settings and move around channels or to search for and load content. Not all apps work with it, but Netflix does, so you can navigate to any Netflix content just using your voice. Motion is also good with no obvious issues with 24fps material, with correct pulldown applied when the Motion Style is set to Movie. You can also set it to off to achieve correct motion with most other viewing material. All other motion options add in interpolation and soap opera effect even in the minimum settings and should be handled with care if you decide to use them for fast-moving video and sports footage. The Philips’ unique selling point in a crowded TV market, however, is Ambilight, and the 805 has a three-sided implementation. Technically speaking, it’s an integrated bias lighting system that, besides adding to the overall immersion, can reduce eye fatigue for long sessions in front of the screen – especially so in darkened rooms.

Hi all, had the 55OLED856 one week now after it's first decent price drop at Richer Sounds and have spent more time trying to get it set up to a reasonable level than I have any other recent bit of tech I can remember. If anyone could assist with one or more of the following issues, I'd be really grateful. For 2021, Philips is doubling-down on this exclusive tech by making it available across more of its TV range and adding an Ambilight strip to the bottom edge of more models. This fourth side of Ambilight probably won't make a huge difference if the TV is placed on a stand, but it should look fabulous if you go down the wall-mounted route. Android TV 10 That said, there's no reason to be majorly alarmed: while Google TV is an improvement over Android TV in terms of usability, its feature set is more or less the same. What's more, it essentially goes on top of Android TV 10, so there's no reason that Philips couldn't make it available as a software update if its TVs don't launch with it pre-installed. Philips 2021 TV range breakdown This TV offers superb value for money, not only in its performance but in its spec sheet too. It’s great to see both Dolby Vision and HDR10+ supported, plus features like HDMI 2.1/eARC and Dolby Atmos.Philips uses the Android smart TV platformacross its TV range, with 2021 models getting the latest Android 10 iteration. It’s the most common TV platform and the most unremarkable – though Android’s stability issues have generally improved over the past couple of years, thanks to updates from Google. The Philips OLED+936 has the identical OLED panel and processor set-up as the 986 above. It's the form factor and speaker system that differ.
