If you want the memoir portion to carry the water (pun intended), you might be left a little wanting. However, I've seen other reviewers respond differently, so this may have just been the specific way I connected with the material.In the song Changes it actually talks about how some days we want to push further and some days we feel like doing nothing. And that often comes with a mood and an attitude towards life. Sometimes when life throws you things you can’t control and naturally your attitude is to be upset or to be disappointed or discouraged. But when you fight through those feelings that are just feelings in the end of the day you choose to put your effort into your work or into your passion and find that drive .. Life is worth living. And if you’re not going to give up the only thing to do is push forward. We are vulnerable at sea. We are vulnerable at home too, but the sea makes metaphors of our vulnerabilities, imbues them with value, lets them teach us. In our offices, in our lives, we might say we are “swamped,” “trimming our sails,” “battening the hatches” or “facing a headwind.” But at sea these phrases describe real urgencies. Beyond the Book

The memoir, then, is a mix of the personal with the science, ecology, history, and the living, breeding, birthing, nurturing conditions of an amazing winged creature known for its ability to migrate thousands of miles from their homes. One of the biggest problems we have is we waste way much time on planning rather than taking action. In other words, it can also be called procrastination. We want to perfectly plan what to do five steps ahead. Instead what we really should be doing is to take the first step and then another and then another. A mix of Rachel Carson and the Eliot Rappaport’s Reading the Glass: A Captain's View of Weather, Water, and Life on Ships I read earlier this year, and even beyond that, some Mary Oliver-esque poeticism, to lyrical writing of one of my favorite subjects in a way that resonated deeply with me. Ten stars, 20 stars, all the stars, bravo.
