In terms of choosing between native 360 – where the viewer chooses the angle – and reframed, where you do, I think this depends on the intended usage. Most of the time, I think reframed makes sense, as most video viewing is passive, and most video creators want to choose what the viewers see (or don’t see).

The 4k ‘Boost’ module has seen the biggest overhaul - certainly when comparing the 4k lens of its predecessor. The sensor has been overhauled to deliver better performance, improved shot quality and most impressively 48MP in still image mode. Given that you’re effectively getting two cameras in one, there are separate specs for the 4K and 360 lens configurations. The Insta360 X3 is an entirely different beast. This is an all-in-one device which features two 1/2inch sensors on the top end and a large screen on the body. However, that screen is small. It’s dynamic, changing orientation and according to the aspect ratio of the video or photos you’re creating, but its 24x24mm size make it hard to use for anything other than making sure your subject is roughly in the centre of the screen. Despite that tiny size, it works well enough for doing a piece to camera. Both the One RS and X3 have very similar shooting modes. Both can shoot RAW images, HDR photos and have a mode called Pureshot which automatically improves the quality of your shots without editing.

Insta360 have developed two awesome but imperfect cameras for creating unique content, action shots and vlogs. They can both claim to be “two cameras in one” but I’d say this is more accurate for the Insta360 One RS which does literally have two separate lenses. Devices that do not meet the above requirements may still be able to use the app to control the camera, however, performance of some processor-intensive and AI-powered features may be sub-optimal. The Insta360 ONE RS Twin Edition is the successor to the company's ONE R Twin Edition, a similarly modular action camera released in 2020. Both have practically identical form factors, however the ONE RS boasts some internal upgrades that distinguish it from its predecessor. It’s a touchscreen, of course, and it’s a cinch to swipe between all the main modes and find other options by swiping up and down.This is more capable than the first-gen version, but we’re not convinced how useful the 6K widescreen feature really is. Much more useful is the ability to record in great-looking 4K, which was always pin-sharp and ultra-smooth. The X3 is fully waterproof to 10m and the larger touchscreen makes it overall more easy to use. Like the One RS the X3 can also be used as two different kinds of cameras. When using both lenses the X3 is a 360 camera but you can also go to single lens mode and shoot 4K “normal” video. I’ll show you some comparisons between both the 360 and flat video that these cameras can shoot later in this article.
