Axolotls are an endangered species because nearly all of their original habitat has been lost. Originally, axolotls lived in Lakes Xochimilco and Chalco in central Mexico. Over time, Lake Chalco has been drained of water to prevent flooding, and it is now completely gone. What’s more, Lake Xochimilco, is no longer classified as a lake and is now just a series of heavily polluted canals. Habitat loss is the main reason behind the endangerment of the whooping crane. In recent years, this species of bird has also been heavily impacted by collisions with power lines, drought, and the development of its natural habitat.
