About this deal

My real breakthrough was THE GRUFFALO, again illustrated by Axel. We work separately - he’s in London and I’m in Glasgow - but he sends me letters with lovely funny pictures on the envelopes. Choose one of the book titles featured in the book. Could you write the story that might appear in this book? When you have finished your nest why not add all the bits you found to a big bowl or basin and make a magic garden potion by adding water. Make an alien from play dough

Look at the different fonts used in each book. Could you choose appropriate fonts to use in different places (e.g. comic strips, news headlines, adverts). What is your favourite book? Could your class make a set of posters to advertise your favourite books? I really enjoy writing verse, even though it can be fiendishly difficult. I used to memorise poems as a child and it means a lot to me when parents tell me their child can recite one of my books.Carry out a survey of your class / school to find out their favourite books / authors. Could you create a report about the results? Carry out a survey of family and friends to find out their favourite books from the past. What favourite stories did your parents / grandparents read? Why did they like them? How have stories / books changed over time? I’ve had a number of people say it made them laugh when my little alien flew past in my video. The alien is green and in his flying saucer in the book. But, if you were to make an alien what would it look like? In a bowl, beat butter and sugar until fluff. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each one. El texto es sencillo y presenta diferentes fuentes y formatos que ayudan al lector a descubrir las múltiples formas de comunicación escrita; cómic, periódico, revistas, recetas, entre otros.

Before launching into any story spend a little time looking at the front cover picture and title. You’ll be surprised at the benefits of doing this. The children can guess the content of the story. This will not only help them brainstorm ideas about what they may be about to listen to, it will also arouse their interest. They will be drawn into listening to you once you begin reading. Furthermore, the beautiful and creative illustrations add to the fun. This is a great introductory text to use as an example of a story with key stage one children. The rhyming throughout is a trademark of Donaldson’s stories, subtly introducing poetic language and new vocabulary. Each illustration reflects the type of text allowing children to see the difference between a comic, a magazine or a traditional fairy tale. This is useful as part of the national curriculum, key stage one children identify the features of different types of texts and produce their own in English.

In the book the spaceman took cake and his favourite book into space. What would you take with you if you went into space? Personalise the language and provide an opportunity for learners to talk about a subject that they are genuinely interested in I found this book extremely captivating to read and feel that children of a young age would find it exciting because throughout the book we are introduced to many different characters and stories. One could imagine children integrating well with the book. They could draw their own picture from the book they find the most interesting from Charlie’s collection. This could lead onto telling their partner which book it comes from and why it’s their favourite. Before Malcolm and I had our three sons we used to go busking together and I would write special songs for each country; the best one was in Italian about pasta.

The knight in the book made the dragon laugh. Can you make the dragon laugh too? Do you have some good jokes? Can you write them on our template and then try them out on your family, in person, on the phone or maybe on FaceTime. Did they make them laugh?I love shiny things! And every jewel thief loves treasures, just like the thief in the book. Can you find some small pebbles and stones and turn them into treasure? How about using pens or paints? Or even wrapping them in tinfoil? Take some digital photos of your friends reading their favourite books in some weird and wonderful places!
