We helped the Kenya Wildlife Service move 29 threatened elephants from Shimba Hills to Tsavo East National Park. Having grown up watching Okavango on Rupavahini, any story set in the veldts of Africa still feels close to the heart. And indeed this felt like revisiting a favorite childhood haunt.

We helped establish the Species Survival Network (SSN), the leading coalition of wildlife organisations working within the CITES framework. With Will Travers as President, SSN began its work to prevent exploitation of animals by reducing the impact of international trade. Later in the book, the author is surprised to find out that the cubs were responsible for raiding domestic goat enclosures during the night - I wasn't! The cubs too had been treated as pets and were fed goat meat from a young age. How do you then not expect them to hunt for the same food you have taught them to like? Fearful for her future, Virginia and Bill launched a campaign to give Pole Pole a better life and even found a reserve in southern Africa willing to take her. But in 1983, aged just 16, she died, euthanised following an unsuccessful attempt by the zoo authorities to move her to Whipsnade Zoo Park where she would have had elephants for company.
