In addition to numerous theatrical and radio adaptations, [45] [46] [47] [48] Ernaux's novels have been adapted for the cinema on three occasions: Her parents ran a grocery shop in rural Normandy and steadily grew into a state of material comfort: “They only really longed for things for the sake of it, because in actual fact they didn’t know what was beautiful or what people were expected to admire.” She expresses these reasons for her parents’ ignorance plainly, as though trying not to pass judgement, but she doesn’t excuse them with fondness either.

La Place, or The Place, or Positions, is entitled A Man’s Place on the hardcover edition I bought in the mid-eighties that you see above. I can’t recall if I ever read it, but I thought I would read it in conjunction with a long unfinished novel I mess around with from time to time about my own father. I also read it now because I saw Ilse had been reading Ernaux’s work and as so often happens with Ilse, she nudged me (gently, urgently) through her lovely review to read her work. I felt called by her and was glad she did. Is she a great writer in this book? I don't know, it's an unspectacular story and style, at least in this translation, but also quietly moving. An unsentimental portrait of a man loved as a parent, admired as an individual but, because of habits and education, heartbreakingly apart. Moving and memorable.'

This is a seminal work in the application of masculinity-studies to historical research. The concept of masculinity has been approached by social scientists and historians repeatedly, but ultimately most influentially by Raewynn Connell in the book “Masculinities,” which is a definite influence on Tosh. Tosh builds a narrative of shifting masculine identity, following male members of four middle-class families through the nineteenth century, and exploring their domestic relations as thoroughly as possible, while comparing these specific case studies to broader trends and more well-known exemplars of masculine identity. It becomes clear that each Victorian generation differed in terms of its definition of “a man’s place” in terms of the home, but that throughout the period, the concept of being head of a home was fundamental to the sense of being a man. I found the sections on rearing and training of sons to be especially interesting – assuring their future manhood was a problematic and at times stressful burden on fathers, often far more than protecting the “honor” of daughters was. Daughters, Tosh finds, often received more affection and unrepressed love from their fathers, because there was no concern that “coddling” them would leave them dependent on their fathers – women were supposed to be dependent, while men were not.

Early in her career, Ernaux turned from fiction to focus on autobiography. [14] Her work combines historic and individual experiences. She charts her parents' social progression ( La Place, La Honte), [15] her teenage years ( Ce qu'ils disent ou rien), her marriage ( La Femme gelée), [16] her passionate affair with an Eastern European man ( Passion simple), [17] her abortion ( L'Événement), [18] Alzheimer's disease ( Je ne suis pas sortie de ma nuit), [19] the death of her mother ( Une femme), and breast cancer ( L'usage de la photo). [20] Ernaux also wrote L'écriture comme un couteau ( Writing as Sharp as a Knife) with Frédéric-Yves Jeannet.
