Meanwhile, criminal profiler Terry McCaleb is called to a murder scene where the killer has left a message that seems to implicate Bosch. The pair, first at odds, must now work together to clear Harry's name... A great book with some courtroom drama, gumshoeing, and the blame game, as well as some very detailed analysis of Hieronymous Bosch, the artist.

Dead Guy Junior: McCaleb was so taken with "Cielo Azul", the name Bosch gave to an anonymous murder victim, that he named his daughter after her.Even the titles of the books used to be cleverer. Compare The Drop (a simple reference to Deferred Retirement Option Plan) to The Concrete Blonde (a reference to both lady justice statue on the courthouse and the body of a blonde entombed in concrete. This 9th book in the 'Bosch Universe' pairs two popular Michael Connelly characters: Harry Bosch and Terry McCaleb. The book can be read as a standalone. Yeah, it's too bad," Bosch said without a note of sympathy in his voice. "The kid had a bright future helping you kill people and getting people out of jail." Bosch admits to having trouble quitting smoking, which he was initially fairly successful at in Angels Flight until his Cigarette of Anxiety. Bosch confesses to McCaleb that Harvey Pounds was killed because of an off-the-books investigation he was involved in. Like in Blood Work, the book Buddy is reading (here identified only by title but almost certainly Val McDermid's The Wire in the Blood) is real; this one is another murder mystery and follows the work of two profilers chasing down a serial killer. Like the Bosch stories would later be, this book and others about it's main characters would later be made into a TV series.A Storm Is Coming: Bosch thinks this as he fights his way through the scrum of reporters at the David Storey trial. There is no end of things in the heart. Somebody once told me that. She said it came from a poem she believed in. She understood it to mean that if you took something to heart, really brought it inside those red velvet folds, then it would always be there for you. No matter what happened, it would be there waiting. She said this could mean a person, a place, a dream. A mission. Anything sacred. She told me that it is all connected in those secret folds. Always. It is all part of the same and will always be there, carrying the same beat as your heart. I am fifty-two years old and I believe it.” Anyway, Terrence McClam doesn't even make a good investigator, let alone a trained profiler. His style is more of a "I got a square piece of evidence here, how do I cram it into the triangular hole of the 'gut instinct' theory I literally was fed by the killer's misdirection?" method than "Let's look at the evidence and see where it actually takes us" method. Literally as soon as the painter Bosch was mentioned, Tryhard McFailure stopped investigating the case and started fitting the investigation around Bosch the detective.
