About this deal

When determining the right pot size for a plant, it’s important to consider both the diameter and volume of the container. To measure diameter, use a ruler or measuring tape to measure across the top rim of the container. For round pots, calculate approximate volume by treating them like a cylinder. No matter what kind of pot you are measuring, make sure you subtract any empty space between the rim and top surface of your pot when calculating its volume. What does pot size mean for plants? We refer to the size of pots by their volume capacity in litres. The below graphic gives an approximate measurement of the most common pot sizes that we use – think of the ones you’d find in your local garden centre! A wide range of perennials are available in 2-litre pots, particularly when you buy them earlier in the season before they have put on growth.

A 4 liter plant pot has a volume of 0.15 cubic feet. This is equivalent to 1 gallon, which is the standard size for a potted plant. To calculate the volume of a 4 liter pot, you simply need to multiply 4 liters by 0.0353146667 (this is the conversion rate from liters to cubic feet). If a plant’s pot is too small, its root system will become overwhelmed and eventually become bound, leading to stunted growth as well as other problems such as nutrient deficiencies and root rot. We offer a range of ‘feature size’ plants in 5-litre pots. These bigger plants are fantastic for providing immediate high impact colour in your garden, or placed in a pot on the patio as an instant feature plant.

However, it’s important to note that factors such as soil quality, sunlight exposure, temperature, humidity and fertilization also play a role in plant growth. Ultimately, while pot size may influence yield potential due to the availability of resources for the roots, other environmental factors are just as important. Are bigger pots better for plants? Similarly, if the pot is too big, then it can cause the soil to become waterlogged, leading to oxygen deprivation that stunts plant growth. The ideal size for most plants is one or two inches larger than the current root ball – this allows adequate drainage while still providing enough space for healthy growth. Does pot size determine yield or root? Measuring the volume of a flower pot is done by multiplying the radius squared by pi and the height, then dividing that number by 281. First, measure the radius of the pot in inches or centimeters, depending on which unit you prefer. Multiply this number by itself to square it, then multiply that number again by pi (3.14).Records the default button state of the corresponding category & the status of CCPA. Mini plugs measure from 4-6cm from base to tip and usually need 8-10 weeks of further indoor growth before planting out. Standard or medium plugs are 6-8cm in height. They will be ready for planting after 6 to 8 weeks. Jumbo plugs (8-12cm) are also called garden-ready plugs and, provided there is no longer a risk of frost, can go straight into hanging baskets, beds and outdoor pots. Dimensions: 40.8cm diameter top, 29.8cm diameter base and 33cm depth. Internal top diameter 36cm. Capacity: 30 litres. Calculating the soil volume of a pot is an important step in determining how much soil you need to fill it. To begin, measure the height, width and depth of the pot in inches. Then use the following formula: Volume = Height x Width x Depth.

Dimensions: 9cm diameter top and 7cm depth. Capacity: 0.29 litres. Recommendeduse: For pot bedding and young plants. The majority of our shrubs are available in 3-litre pots as their roots tend to be a little larger than the perennials. Later in the season, more of our perennials will be moved into 3-litre pots. Dimensions: 60cm diameter top, 42.2cm diameter base and 43cm depth. Internal top diameter 54cm. Capacity: 80 litres. At crocus, we have over 30 different sizes of pots that plants and trees are grown in. Here is a simple guide to the different options (and some nice pics of Mike our webmeister).
