About this deal

What social or personal crimes have resulted in destroying the lives of Daniel Padgett, Millie Tranter, and Adrian Boyde? How do these characters shed light on enduring problems in contemporary society?

To the Lighthouse focuses on two specific days at the Ramsay summer home, but the two days are set ten years apart. The story is told in three parts: part one, "The Window,” depicts James, the youngest Ramsay son, at odds with his father because Mr. Ramsay would not indulge in his son's desire to see the lighthouse, saying the weather would be too bad. Mrs. Ramsay throws a dinner party and tries to bring everyone together, but her husband and various other guests are rude and at odds with one another. Finally, the tension dissolves, and Mrs. Ramsay relishes in one moment of unity and connection, knowing it will not last. Everything is nicely set up for an intriguing mystery, and sure enough the second half includes a secondary murder, and from then on escalates into a gripping drama. A long-forgotten mystery from history, a tale of betrayal and deep resentment, reveals the reasons for what happened. To pile on the suspense, one of the officers falls gravely ill, in itself a life-threatening risk in such a remote location. This character is unable to complete the work, although they are working out the puzzle in their mind. Another excels in a situation they have not experienced before. There is an extremely tense and exciting edge-of-the-seat scene towards the end, cleverly written by this experienced author. And we have a happy ending of an unexpected type. Cand este descoperit un al doilea cadavru Adam va trebui sa lupte si cu boala, pe insula circuland SARS-ul pe care pare ca si el l-ar fi contractat. Izolat fiind la infirmerie, echipa lui lucreaza in locul sau incercand sa se descurce singuri, dar pana la urma revelatia misterului si rezolvarea cazului vor veni tot de la el. The story is set in WW2, February 1941, about a young girl named Olive and her brother(Cliff) whose big sister gets lost and are evacuated to Devonshire to live in a light house on Devon's edge with a mysterious lighthouse keeper. There, Olive has to solve a mystery of her own: a strange coded letter holding very important information which seems to link her sister (Sukie) with Devon and to something important and impossibly dangerous.

This book does a great job hitting the reader in all the right places to get them to experience the heavy emotions it was trying to convey. It deeply explores grief, an emotion we all experience at one point in life. It does a great job showing us how grief can greatly damage our mental health, making us believe that there is no realistic path forward after an irreversible loss, even though there is always a way out of that dark tunnel, if one changes their perspective, and allows time to slowly make the wound hurt less. We walk with Amy through this dark path, and get to see how Ryan shines a beacon of light in her life that allows all of these shadows to start losing their influence on her. We get to experience the simple purity of kindness that Ryan embodies through his character, which is a very refreshing breath of air, since this kindheartedness is very difficult to come across in our day to day lives.

The Lighthouse is the 13th mystery novel by P.D. James to feature her detective Adam Dalgliesh. The penultimate one in the series, it was published in 2005. P. D. James’s love of English poetry and literature comes across in her frequent quoting of such writers as John Donne [p. 59], Virginia Woolf [p. 134], and others. How does this receptivity to poetic language make itself felt in her narrative style and descriptive language? I would highly recommend this book to a person who likes adventures and mysteries, and unexpected endings. It's extremely fun and extraordinary. History-lovers would also love this book. The reader really gets a feel for the dangerous living conditions in London during World War II. Christopher Parker’s debut work is all heart with a subject that is relatable to many that of loss and unconditional love. Ryan and Amy make Seabrook come alive but I do wish that the author had not used the cliched dialogues between them that suddenly brings home the fact that is fiction and not real. The Lamplighters was possibly inspired by the mystery of Flannan Isles Lighthouse, when three lighthouse keepers vanished from their station. This particular novel is set in Cornwall in 1972 when three keepers vanish from a remote lighthouse. What happened to them? The Light Between Oceans by M L Stedman

READERS GUIDE

I enjoyed reading this book. I found the characters really interesting and there were some really exciting twists and turns but at times I found the plot a little bit confusing! I'm not sure if the history in the book was realistic as I think that Britain did allow refugees to come into the country in the second world war. I am already very interested in WW2. I would like to read more books by Emma Carrol and I would definitely recommend this book to other readers. My present opinion is that it is easily the best of my books,” Woolf wrote of To the Lighthouse—but not everyone agreed.

There are so many great lighthouse books, some technical, some about specific aspects of lighthouse keeping. There are also some great reads from former lighthouse keepers, keepers’ wives and others who have lived in a lighthouse. I meant nothing by The Lighthouse,” Woolf wrote to a friend in 1927. “One has to have a central line down the middle of the book to draw the design together. I saw that all sorts of feelings would accrue to this, but I refused to think them out, & trusted that people would make it the deposit for their own emotions—which they have done, thinking it means one thing after another. I can’t manage Symbolism except in this vague, generalised way. Whether it’s right or wrong I don’t know; but directly I’m told what a thing means, it becomes hateful to me.” 7. Margaret Atwood wasn’t a fan—until she was. When the old lighthouse mysteriously begins to glow brighter and brighter, what could it mean? Is it a sign of something to come? Is it real or imagined? How would the novel be different if the story was only told from one character's point of view? Would it be as convincing? Time is TransientThe Lighthouse was a debut novel by Christopher Parker. I would categorize it more as a Y. A. genre. It was slow especially in the beginning. The Lighthouse explored family relationships, death, friendships, trust, parent/child relationships, letting go and romance. I listened to the audiobook that was read by Braden Wright. I found his voice annoying at times and felt that he was not the best fit to portray some of the characters in The Lighthouse. I was rather disappointed in his overall performance.

All of Scottish author Thompson’s novels feature details from surrealist paintings on their covers – by Ernst, Delvaux, Magritte, De Chirico and Conroy Maddox – apart from this one, her third, but it could easily have done. A ghost story about a haunted lighthouse and island, it has a dreamlike atmosphere similar to that in her later novel Burnt Island. Characters are always noticing other characters walking across the beach towards them, as if out of nowhere. Stephen King is a fan. Published in 2022, The Great Lighthouses of Ireland is an excellent compilation of Irish lighthouses featuring lots of historical photographs and information. Lighthouse Encyclopedia: The Definitive Reference by Ray Jones They warn of danger and yet lighthouses in fiction rarely seem to keep characters safe. Work in one and suffer loneliness or worse. Set foot in one in any capacity and immediately feel your options narrowing. There may be only one way in but there will be two ways out, one of which you don’t want to think about. They rise out of the land – and the sea – with the undeniable power of a symbol, a prophecy. If a lighthouse is a symbol, it may be a phallic one, as Helen Dunmore concedes in her lovely Granta piece about Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse. Here, however, Whitehaven lighthouse – painted red and white with a green “eye” – is closely associated with the main character Arthur’s mother. A novel that reads as if HP Lovecraft had moved to West Cumbria in 2011.

I am unsure if Secrets of the Lighthouse is set on a particular lighthouse. Possibly Slyne Head or Clare Island Lighthouse. The Lamplighters by Emma Stonex A great read about life as a lighthouse keeper. It Was Fun While it Lasted had me laughing at the pranks played on Arthur as a Supernumerary Keeper and during his training period.
