Gerry befriends Theo, a fellow animal lover, and the duo gather an ever-growing menagerie. Leslie has a penchant for firearms, but his enthusiasm wanes when he falls for a girl. Margo discovers the local community's less-than-favourable attitudes toward women. Larry's attempt at matchmaking for his mother ends poorly. Little by little, the family settles into their new home. Lawrence Samuel Durrell, Louisa Durrell and their children were all born in India during the British Raj. Following Lawrence Samuel Durrell's death in 1928, Mrs Durrell and her three younger children moved to the United Kingdom, where Lawrence had already been sent to be educated. In 1935, the Durrells moved to the Greek island of Corfu. They remained there until the summer of 1939, when the impending outbreak of World War II forced most of them to return to England. Gerald's autobiographical Corfu trilogy and several short stories record the family's time in Corfu, albeit in a somewhat fictional way. In 2005, it was adapted by the BBC as a 90-minute film, My Family and Other Animals, starring Eugene Simon as the young Gerry, Imelda Staunton as Mrs. Durrell and Omid Djalili as Spiro. So the Durrell family does what seems only natural to them and sell their house. Once free of their home in England, they are free to relocate completely to Corfu, an exotic and sunny Greek island.
