You can't ask the HomePod mini to play anything through Spotify – that can only be enabled through AirPlay, and requires using your phone rather than the simpler method of asking Siri to play tunes with your voice. If there’s a single reason to buy the HomePod mini, it’s the sound quality, which delivered clear treble and smooth mids during our tests.

Sky has instead focused purely on delivering an “immersive sound”– and who are we to argue with that? With such high levels of performance, it's one of the best wireless Bluetooth speakers you can find on the market today at this price. What this all translates into is vastly improved sound, and while the Sonos One was mono only, the Era 100 distinguishes itself by providing a superb stereo experience. The bass is deeper and fuller, there's more clarity and detail throughout and even at higher volume, timing is excellent and the tonal balance is wonderfully even. It's predominantly a stationary, use-at-home type of product, but the Era 100's Bluetooth connectivity gives it more flexibility in use and makes it eligible for a spot on this list.Audio is really strong, too: bigger, punchier and louder than you’d expect from such a small box. Play Juiceby Lizzo and the Micro 2 does justice to the song’s upbeat tempo with the singer's vocals vibrantly portrayed. Midrange in particular is dealt with in a much more appealing manner than anything else we’ve seen at this price.
The only issue is that it can start to suffer from distortion at louder volumes, but we found it to be one of the best-value options if you’re really on a tight budget. Really impressive stuff. Because it’s loud, it already attracts attention, and if you can avoid annoying people from the start, you might be able to attract a crowd and meet new people. What really made the difference was using the Bass+ and Power settings. The rumbling bass felt like being in a club or concert in closer proximity, and was the part that really carried the sound further distances. There is no Dolby Atmos, only Dolby Digital Plus. Sky says that its Sky+ service doesn’t support the surround-sound format and therefore not all of its customers would benefit. One advantage the Soundbox’s competitors do hold over it is that they’re a little more practical. The M3, for example, although still quite bulky is shorter by an inch or so than the SoundBox and is likely to more comfortably sit in front of more TVs. It also comes with a wall-mounting kit, where the Soundbox does not.
There’s no equalizer in the app, and some fine print within it suggests not using one to begin with. You’re certainly free to do so from whichever source you’re playing music from, assuming they offer it, as most music streaming services don’t. The good news is that the New Soundboks sounds great — even better than we expected at louder volumes. Some distortion sets in at 10 and 11, which is to be expected, but we would only go that far if we were outside in more open areas.Bigger speakers tend to sound better, delivering bigger sound with more bass. But going bigger means they weigh more, which can make them a little harder to carry around. So you have to balance size with performance if you're looking for something that's easily portable. When I tested with Blue Planet II and Star Wars VII – Force Awakens Blu-ray discs played through my Xbox One S, it processed the audio just fine. Sky Soundbox review: Verdict While this will depend on the kit you are using and your wi-fi limitations at home, transmitting audio over wi-fi rather than Bluetooth comes with certain benefits: wi-fi doesn't have as limited a signal range as Bluetooth, generally facilitates better sound quality and is capable of transmitting higher-quality audio (Bluetooth is not widely capable of transmitting CD-quality or above music).
