About this deal

The Sena 50S has a jog dial control mechanism while the 50R has a button control mechanism. The 50S is slightly bigger and has a larger battery compared to the 50R, which has a sleek profile. With real breadth and depth and no attempt is made here to cover App content in detail – that would take another submission itself, so only three features are discussed below. Mesh & Bluetooth Management There are three intercom modes available to users, ‘Open’ Mesh mode, ‘Private Group’ Mesh, and Bluetooth Intercom. Allows users to increase/decrease the decibel level of different frequency ranges of audio: Balance setting adjusts all ranges to the same volume level (0dB); Bass Boost increases bass range (20-250Hz); Mid-Boost increases mid range (250Hz – 4kHz); and, Treble Boost increases high range (4kHz – 20kHz). This feature, along with the superb new Sena HD speakers provide an outstanding audio environment. WiFi Adapter Support

The Sena 50S has a jog dial which has been seen on previous models like the 20S. This feature is the most useful and convenient to riders wearing motorcycle gloves. When the 50R is ON, hold the centre button for ten seconds, ‘Configuration Menu’ is heard, now push the ‘+’ button once, ‘Phone Pairing’ is heard. Initiate pairing per the sequence above. Bluetooth Intercom PairingThe greatest asset of the 50S is group riding, and if that is something you do a lot, then the Mesh 2.0 technology we will get into later is definitely worth the money. Fitting the Sena isn’t quite as simple as some of its competitors thanks to a clamp that uses two small Allen-head set-screws. A key is included, and once on it’s a very secure mount, so it’s worth the extra five minutes of fiddling. Here you can see where the ‘riders’ were for the Mesh test. Rider 1 is effectively the tail rider of this test, rider 2 marks the limit of that connection, then rider 3 shows how the Mesh system increases range while keeping everyone in conversation

I quite like this feature as there is nothing I hate more than constantly plugging things in and manually doing updates via a computer. Keep it simple, and I’m happy. Measuring 102 millimeters in width, the Sena 50S is compact and portable, allowing for easy transportation and storage. I have the most trouble with ‘Hey Sena, stop music’, with perhaps a 30% success rate. If I very clearly enunciate the plosive in ‘stop’, it seems to work a bit better, but the device also doesn’t seem to like one command directly following another, so you need to pause a few seconds, then try again, which can be frustrating when you need to shut the music off to speak to someone. The flip up MESH antenna. Difficult to flip up using rain or cold weather gloves. The antenna should be incorporated into the wiring harness and routed inside the helmet for a permanent configuration. The 50S will allow you to connect to your phone, other intercom users, and a GPS. Many riders use their phone as a GPS now with Apps like Google Maps, in which case connect your headset to your phone, and you will be good to go.

The 50S can activate an internal microphone to activate the Ambient Audio feature by double tapping the Ambient Mode Button on the bottom of the clamp kit. The 50R does not have the Ambient Audio feature. Within the same channel in Open Mesh or private groups in Group Mesh, six (6) users can talk at the same time. And the Group Mesh Intercom Mode now supports up to 24 participants (users) in a private communication group, although the six at a time talking rule still applies. How amazing would it be to get to talk to the other riders in your vicinity with just the press of a button? Or to communicate with your buddy riding along with you without any effort? Because when you’re on a motorbike, communicating can be a rather difficult job because of the wind and the noise. But the revised Mesh 2.0 feature of this product makes everything possible. It supports a large number of users within the 5-mile range. Audio Multi-tasking was hit and miss with the SR10 that I have connected to a RADAR detector, and a 2 way amateur radio. Another HUGE FAIL for me. Works perfectly with my 10S or 20S EVO. When it did work, and the connection ceased, streaming music from my iPhone 8 would be jittery. Had to re-boot the 50S to solve the issue.Sena states that the Mesh 2.0 features and capabilities provide a more robust and reliable communication system, with audio intercom clarity and sound quality significantly boosted thanks to optimal path planning that provides better reach resulting in fewer dropped messages (communications) due to obstacles and interferences. Sena Mesh 2.0 Functions, General Features and Compatibility Functionally, the FM Radio feature of the Sena 50R and 50S models are extremely good…it seems to get a little better (unless imagined), with each new model and firmware tweaks have historically helped to stabilize the performance of this handy and valued feature. Mesh intercoms typically don’t work across different brands, but it’s just been announced that the new Mesh devices from Sena and Interphone will be compatible. Motorcycle Bluetooth headsets must have a dedicated antenna designed to increase the range and detect riders who are further away. They should also have an app that offers seamless connectivity and multiple features.
