As a lawn aerator I Fancied the Einhell, but as a scarifier of lighter material, on money, this wins hands down at just over half the price! I think for thatch this is a real winner: I’m a big fan of Hyundai’s garden products – I recently tried-and-tested their petrol lawn mower, and it’s the best I’ve ever used. So, I expected their 2-in-1 Lawn Scarifier and Aerator to also become a favourite. Keep reading to see how it fared when put to the test. However, if you have a larger lawn, you’ll want a wider cutting width, of 35-40cm or more, to make scarifying a more efficient process. Is a lawn rake the same as a scarifier? Bosch is a brand that just about everyone is familiar with. I’ve personally used several Bosch products across my garden and home and have always been happy with how they have performed.
Manual rolling drum – ideally you want a good number of metal spikes on the drum to create plenty of holes – as a guide, 27 spikes will give you about 180 spikes per square metre. The spikes should also be at least 5cm long to ensure they penetrate the ground deeply. Of course, it’s entirely possible to scarify your lawn with a handheld rake. But this is a very labour intensive job that is also inefficient as well since you are unlikely to remove enough thatch. Mechanical lawn rakers offer an easier, faster and more accurate way to detach large areas. Now here’s the thing! Is the Bosch ALR 900 a practical lawn rake? We know it performs extremely well getting the job done, but what about practicalities?

Things started off well, as this lawn rake and scarifier only took about 10 minutes to assemble. Although the instructions that come with the machine aren’t great, it’s easy enough to figure out what goes where – simply attach the handles, plug in the power lead, and you’re good to go! However, let’s start at the beginning – the grand unboxing. It’s always a bonus when garden tools need minimal assembly, and this scarifier definitely fell into that category. Assembly only took about 15 minutes. All that needed to be done was assemble the handles, clip the cables into place, and swap the aerating roller that was already inserted with the scarifying roller.
I really struggled to find any major downsides to this rake, it even comes with a 2 year warranty if you register the rake with Bosch. The light weight (9.4kg), small size and fold away handles make this lawn rake excellent for smaller lawns or lawns with smaller strips of grass. The 32 cm width seems to be just right when you need to navigate lawns with flower beds or narrow strips, however, if I had a very large open lawn I would consider a lawn rake with a larger width. If your garden is on the small side, or if you’re only seeking a lawn scarifier (without the aerator) then it may not be worth splurging on Hyundai’s 2-in-1 Lawn Scarifier. However, I consider this the best lawn scarifier and aerator machine overall. It’s definitely a good option for medium or large gardens. Normally I would complain that levers mounted on the front wheels of a lawn rake are always more difficult to adjust than those mounted more centrally, however the design of the height adjustment lever on the Bosch seems to work very well. Bosch have managed to mount the lever out of the way in the front but still allow for the height to be adjusted easily, very nice!Also look at how easy the depth adjustment is on a given lawn scarifier, before buying it. If you plan to adjust the working depth often, you don’t want it to be a difficult process. What working width do I need? Agriculturean agricultural implement with teeth or tines for gathering cut grass, hay, or the like or for smoothing the surface of the ground. Both rakes really are comparable when it comes to collection efficiency. Both collect the raked debris very well and its hard to see if one is better than the other. Also, they both compact the debris very well and you’ll be surprised just how much can be squashed into the collection box before the need to empty. You can choose from 4 different working depths for working at different times of the year, and also included is a simple, yet decent grass collection box.
