About this deal

The Snowdon Horseshoe refers to the horseshoe shaped ring of peaks that make up part of the Snowdon Massif. This fabulous ridge walk provides incredible views throughout, making it one of the best hikes in Snowdonia (Eryri).

Llanberis Path is the easiest and longest of the six main paths to the summit of Snowdon. Originally, tourists were carried up this path on ponies and mules, and to this day it continues to be a pony path. Glyder Fawr and Glyder Fach are the two highest peaks in the Glyderau (Glyders) range. There are multiple routes to summit these two mountains, ranging from long low-intensity walks to short technical scrambles. The starting location for this hike is in the secluded village of Croesor, with free parking at the Snowdonia National Park car park. On clear days you can enjoy views of Cnicht and the Moelwynions for most of the walk to Cnicht peak. The trail to Cnicht is well signposted.

You may come across the abbreviated version of the terms ‘lat-long’. Latitude and longitude references look like this: ‘50.855226 -1.402772’ and they are quite different to the grid references commonly used for determining points on an Ordnance Survey map. Following the opening of the Llanberis pass in 1832, the Miners Path was built to carry copper from the Britannia Copper Works near Llyn Glaslyn to Pen-y-Pass, where it was then transported to Caernarfon. The mining came to an end in 1916, remains from the work can still be seen on the path to this day. While they have produced a huge variety of map related products over the years, their two flagship products remain the Explorer& Landranger map series that cover the entire island of Great Britain.

As in the route above, from the Ogwen Visitor Centre ascend to Cwm Idwal and Glyder Fawr via the Devil’s Kitchen. This is the shortest route to the summit of Glyder Fawr and takes around 3 hours. Continue onto Castell y Gwynt, Glyder Fach and the Cantilever Stone. The Ordnance Survey is Britain’s national mapping agency and has been producing maps for the public since 1801 (For a complete history have a look at: Map of a Nation: A Biography of the Ordnance Survey) A unique National Grid reference should have this two-letter descriptor followed by the grid reference numbers within that square. National Grid reference numbers The first letter, for example ‘S’, denotes 500 km by 500 km squares and this is subdivided into 25 squares that are 100 km by 100 km within it, making ‘ST’, ‘SU’, ‘SO’ and so on. After passing through the quarry the next climb begins for the craggy summit of Moelwyn Mawr. Take a moment to again enjoy panoramic views of Snowdonia National Park at the summit. Descend Moelwyn Mawr to the southeast before making the final ascent to Moelwyn Bach, which is thankfully 60m lower than it’s bigger brother.
