Overall, I was really impressed with these Giros. They don't offer the same kind of performance as regular road shoes in terms of stiffness and power transfer, but they more than make up for it in other ways. Verdict

Modern cycling shoes differ from conventional ones because they have inserts on the soles that allow you to attach cleats, that themselves affix to a set of cycling-specific pedals so you're clipped into the bike. Confusingly this system, popularised by Look in the 1980s, is referred to as 'clipless', because in the old days cyclists used to slide and fasten their cycling shoes into a set of toe clips instead. Even the most ardent traditionalist would argue that clipless is simply more comfortable, efficient and ergonomic, and there's good reason that toe clips and straps have mostly died out!
When Giro first launched the Empire, it was the first shoe in decades to use laces instead of velcro, ratchets, or BOA dials. Initially many scoffed at the idea, but now just about every brand has its own modern version of the lace up cycling shoe. The Empire SLX is an evolution of the original shoe designed in collaboration with former pro Taylor Phinney, which uses a one-piece, monofilament, Synch Wire Mesh upper, providing plenty of airflow, complete with welded TPU panels for structure. Carbon fibre soles are common, and most manufacturers have some way of rating sole stiffness; these shoes are usually at or near the top of the scale. Although you can still get cycling shoes with leather uppers, most shoemakers now use synthetic materials. They're tough, durable and easy to care for. No matter what type of bike product your buying, from the simple accessories through to the full setup of your custom built road bike, there are lots of important considerations that you should take into account, especially when you’re shopping online and unable to test the product first. This is especially true when you’re buying products like Shoes – Cycle. Weight isn't really a focus of these shoes, given their intended use, so coming in at 720g (360g per shoe) isn't class beating, but is still pretty good. The Bontrager Forays that we recently reviewed come in at 70g more, and the DMT GK1s are 27g heavier, so these still measure up pretty well. Value
