About this deal

Eloquent and surprising...I love this story of faith, love, and the lasting bonds of family.”—Ann Leary, author of Outtakes from a Marriage on The Gin & Chowder Club Poignant yet hopeful, Firefly Summer is an uplifting story of the resilience of sisterhood and the bright glimpses of joy and solace that, like fireflies after rain, can follow even the deepest heartaches. With such a large cast, the length of Firefly Summer makes sense, but it doesn't make it easier to get through. Some serious editing could have improved this story immensely. The story covers a lot of highs and lows and is incredibly surprising at times, but it all ends in the usual Binchy way: a small town coming together to witness a tragedy, leaving the story quite open-ended. Heartfelt and hilarious, witty and wise, with indelible characters and laugh-out-loud humor. A fantastic read for any season of the year.” —Stuart Gibbs, New York Times bestselling author Fireflies aren’t endangered, but scientists are worried about them. In recent years, fewer of the insects have been spotted during the summer. Pesticide use and loss of habitat have likely impacted the population, as has light pollution. Too much nighttime light can be harmful to wildlife, affecting their migration patterns and hunting abilities. For fireflies, light pollution interferes with their attempts to signal each other. We have a whole plan in place.’” (Chapter one) Despite her hesitance, what ultimately helps Ryanna decide she wants to go meet her mother’s family and spend the summer getting to know them? In your opinion, what are the greatest things she can gain from this opportunity? But we live in Los Angeles, and my dad is a writer—he writes screenplays. Not just everything the actors say—all the action and settings and everything else that happens in a movie has to be written down too. (Not everyone knows this. Nana, my dad’s mom, still thinks that the actors make up their own lines, no matter how many times my dad tells her otherwise.) He also used to direct movies, until his last one did so badly that now he’s in movie jail, and when we go on hikes, producers pretend they don’t see him when he waves.Truly the best part of the book was the determination and stubbornness of the kids to save the camp from being torn down. I loved how it tied into the treasure hunt as well, and added some stakes to this otherwise fluffy and comforting book. Glau married actor Val Morrison in 2014, and gave birth to daughters in both 2015 and 2017. She teased a return to TV by portraying Kendall Frost in one episode of Castle season 8, and most recently appeared in two episodes of Wu Assassins season 1 on Netflix. While Glau hasn't discussed her personal life extensively over the past several years, it doesn't appear that she's retired, but rather focusing on being present in her children's lives. On Father's Day 2019, a paparazzo questioned Glau (via YouTube) about the release of Terminator: Dark Fate, and whether she'd have a cameo. "I don't think so," Glau says, while walking with her husband and two daughters, "my hands are full right now." Also known as lightning bugs, fireflies are beetles. Most fireflies are winged. That’s different from other light-producing insects of the same family, called glowworms. (Animals that produce light are called luminescent.) I know for most people, this might not be weird. Normal dads probably sit at kitchen tables all the time. Terminator' Hottie Summer Glau Battles Heavy Metal Demons in 'Knights of Badassdom'!". Bloody-disgusting.com. June 11, 2010. I adored this. It has all the things I love about Matson’s work, but for a younger audience. The summer days are vivid, and the friendships are sweet. I love books about cousins, because my cousins are my best friends. This group of cousins was no exceptions, all precocious and likable and just so fully kids. It was a delight to spend time with them, and I could read a book about ever summer they’ve spent together. I glanced over to the color-coded calendars that hung on the wall. I was going to go to a local day camp for June and half of July. Ginger had her practice, and my dad was going to be on set working. A movie he wrote, Frank N. Stein, was filming in eastern Europe this summer. It was a retelling of Frankenstein in which the monster was a zombie but also a single dad and somehow also a superhero? The last draft my dad let me read had been really confusing; he blamed the notes he was getting from the studio. Fireflies mostly use their light to “talk” to other fireflies and find a mate. They have special organs under their abdomens that take in oxygen. Inside special cells, they combine the oxygen with a substance called luciferin to make light with almost no heat. They use this light, called bioluminescence, to light up the ends of their abdomen. Because suddenly that was all I wanted. I wanted to know more about her—much more than just the same stories I’d heard so often from my dad. And I wanted to know what had happened. Why hadn’t I heard from my mom’s family? What had gone on between my dad and my grandparents to cause a rift this big? Goldman, Eric (February 8, 2007). "Serenity Comes to Sarah Connor". IGN. Archived from the original on October 8, 2008 . When Ryanna asks about her unusual name, her father tells her, “‘Your mom was stubborn. Once she wanted something, she was going to get it. She wanted to name her daughter Ryanna, and was firm on that. And by the time you came along, it just seemed like a given.’” (Chapter three) How does learning the history of her name and her mom’s commitment to using it help Ryanna better understand her mother and who she was as a person? Thinking about yourself, does your name have a history or a particular tie to someone special? What conversation?” I demanded. I felt out of the loop, which always made my mouth get dry and palms sweat. I don't think Eddie was approached in quite the right way. I could believe that he enjoys being a wee hooligan, but Dara and Michael treat him horribly (this pissed me off because they're never corrected; if I EVER hear my children, especially the older ones, talk to a younger one the way Dara and Michael talk to Eddie, I'll figuratively snap their heads off like a Praying Mantis and eat them), Kate and John alternately ignore and punish him, and they simply can't figure out why he's a troublemaker all the time?? PLEASE. It's also inconsistent with the rest of Kate's character: a busy but very loving mother who wouldn't pretty much just *forget* 1 of her 4 children. My dad never talked about my mom’s family, so I only knew the basics. She was one of five siblings, the middle one. She had two brothers and two sisters. But mostly, all the facts I knew about my mom were from when she was older: Her name was Cassandra, but everyone called her Casey. She was gorgeous, with long blond hair and a big smile. She died when I was three. She was crossing the street in New York City when a taxi had run the light, and hadn’t seen her in time. And she was an actress who’d met my dad on the set of Bug Juice, the first movie he wrote. For added fun, gather some “treasures,” and bury them. After doing so, exchange maps with friends and go on a treasure hunt!Birdie's excessive drinking habit didn't feel right, and the way everyone tiptoed around it or treated it with amused indulgence irritated me. She was overwhelmed by many layers of grief and this would have been a great thread to explore, but it is simply glossed over and given no more importance than anything else happening with the sisters.

Ryanna's mother died when she was just three years old, so the maternal side of her family has always been a mystery as they are estranged. But one day she gets an invitation from her maternal grandparents to come spend the summer at their house in the Poconos. Ryanna agrees as she is curious about her extended family and also she hopes to learn more about her mother. What she thought was going to be a quiet lakeside summer with her grandparents turned out to be so much more. It's not just her grandparents who are there; there are aunts, uncles, and cousins staying at what was once a bustling summer camp that her grandparents operated. Camp Van Camp, an idyllic getaway in the Poconos, is no longer in operation, but is in crisis. Nonetheless, Ryanna's days are filled with all the summer fun you would expect lakeside, hanging out with her cousins, treasure maps, her mom's old books, and more. One old treasure map might hold the key to keeping Camp Van Camp. Morgan Matson's middle-grade debut, The Firefly Summer, is an absolute delight of a summer novel. The close-knit Quinn siblings enjoyed the kind of idyllic childhood that seems made for greeting cards, spending each summer at Whit’s End, the family’s home on Cape Cod. Then comes the summer of 1964, warm and lush after a rainy spring—perfect firefly weather. Sisters Birdie, Remy, Sailor, Piper, and their brother, Easton, delight in catching the insects in mason jars to make blinking lanterns. Until, one terrible night, tragedy strikes. If you've never read Binchy, I'd recommend starting with Circle of Friends. It's a classic, possibly her most well-known novel, and a beautiful story with intriguing characters and lots of twists and turns. It's also a manageable length. After watching the brief video, use the following Wiki-How to allow readers to create their own ship in a bottle: https://www.wikihow.com/Build-a-Ship-in-a-Bottle I was really bored reading the lives of these sisters with such detail. I didn’t want to know how they did the dishes or everything they said to their pets! I was always expecting something to set the plot off, but this isn’t that type of book. Whenenver something does happen to move the story along, it didn’t feel realistic and I honestly didn’t care enough about the characters to be moved about it.Past Saturn Awards: Television Awards: Best Supporting Actress". Saturn Awards. Archived from the original on February 9, 2010 . Retrieved July 7, 2013. Predators, such as birds or toads, get a different message from these lights. Although they can easily spot fireflies by their glow, they rarely eat them. That’s because fireflies release drops of toxic, foul-tasting blood. Their flashing is a warning light to predators to stay away. LIGHTS OUT? Each sister is so different; I think readers will gravitate toward some more than others. It is speaks well of how hurt can stay with you until you surrender to it. The sisters were supportive of each other but also oblivious to the hurt that some carried more than others. The unresolved issue of the hurt of their brother’s death also affected their marriages and then becomes a land mine when a trigger goes off. I would have loved this book at ages 9-11. The main character loves mystery books and has a mystery (or a few mysteries) to solve and her trying to get info about the mother who died when she was very young were all my cup of tea and would have also been when I was the target age for this story. The mysteries I could mostly guess from miles away but they were still entertaining. The whole scenario is a bit formulaic I suppose but it worked. I had to suspend disbelief just a bit regarding the main mystery being solved. The situation with Ryanna’s father and grandparents being happily resolved seemed believable because they are all good people.
