Two main Swiss design schools were big contributors to the International Typographic Style history: the Basel Design School that changed their methods to use grid systems in their design work, and the Kunstgewerbeschule led by Ernst Keller, known as the father of Swiss Design. Many of his students became influential Swiss Style graphic designers. Keller preferred impactful posters, unusual layouts, and sans serif typefaces. For Emil Ruder, the goal of typography was to communicate ideas through writing, promoting the good and the beautiful in word and image, to open the way to the arts.He was also an influential educator, retiring in 1987. In 1965 he wrote the Graphic Design Manual, a popular textbook in the field. Emil Ruder played a key role in the development of graphic design in the 1940s and 1950s. His style has inspired many designers, and his use of grids in design has even influenced the development of web design.

Ruder excelled as a typographer, developing a holistic approach to design and teaching that consisted of philosophy, theory, and a systematic methodology. Ruder attached great importance to sans-serif or no-end typefaces.
