About this deal

The Curly Girl Method is a way to improve and enhance your curls using only natural products that don’t contain sulphates, alcohol or silicone. When it comes to looking after curly hair and wavy hair, it’s important to maintain natural oils for added moisture. The curly girl method avoids heat, chemicals and damaging techniques that will otherwise result in dehydrated curls and therefore, damage. Waxes and mineral oils (just like silicones, most waxes and mineral oils can build up on your hair and can only be removed with heavy-duty sulfates to remove) There are five steps to The Curly Girl Method that take commitment, dedication and hard work, but the payoff is priceless: 1. Reset

It really can be a minefield but if you experiment and keep at it, you should definitely see results! 🙂 If you’re not sure who the Curly Girl Method is best for, or if it work for your hair, I will say that type-3 curls tend to see the best results from CGM (again, make sure you know your hair type; it’ll make the jargon you read so much easier), though tons of people with 2c and 4a hair have also had amazing success. So it doesn’t mean you can’t experiment if you have straighter or coilier hair, but just know your mileage may vary. Wavy, type 2 hair will not need as many products as Type C hair, which is the type that needs the most moisturizing and experiences the most shrinkage when dry. So to summarise, ACV rinse, deep condition with banana hair food, end the wash with cold water, scrunch your curls with mousse, apply gel after plopping and diffuse on cold or air dry. See how you get on! 🙂 The main factor behind the Curly Girl Method is the total or partial elimination of shampoo, which will encourage the natural oils present in our hair to take on the job of moisturizing and nourishing dry, split ends. While the guidelines in Massey’s book are mainly based on curly, wavy and afro hair textures, you can personalize the Curly Girl Method to fit the needs of your own head of hair. Curls look less frizzy and feel softer and defined and this is a great alternative to harsh shampoos. In my experience, a ‘curl-wardrobe’ for seasons and styles is best.” For Claire, this means using silicone-free products from the brand’s Curl Jelly and Banana Butter ranges in the summer, and reaching for products containing silicone when heat styling or to help her curls keep their shape in the winter. Shea Moisture’s 10-in-1 Renewal System with a superfruit complex is another great option, as it can be used for multiple purposes: as a cleanser, a rinse-out and/or leave-in deep conditioner.

Scrunching allows you to squish products and moisture into your hair at every step of the process, encouraging clumps (aka defined curls) and healthy hydration. And if you do it upside down, you get the added benefit of volume on finer hair types. Having gotten the final wash out of the way you can now move on to your main go-to form of hair washing from now on, namely co-washes. Co-washing consists of using a co-wash specific conditioner only – so forget about your former two-step routine of shampooing followed by conditioning. Yes, if you have wavy hair, you can use The Curly Girl Method. But it’s important to remember that adopting this method will not transform your wavy hair and make it coily. It may make your waves more defined and even more wavy, but it won’t change your hair type to a totally new one. Still have questions? I honestly don't blame you. So let's get through some of these rapid-fire, shall we?

Hairsprays

Scrunch gel from ends toward the scalp, starting at the nape and working up, scrunch the top layer last. Clip the roots for lift. Co-washes: Sometimes referred to as cleansing conditioners, these 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner formulas with higher ratios of conditioning ingredients are great for refreshing curls when your hair doesn't really feel dirty. They're hydrating and add great slip for detangling. Plus, they're easy when you're short on time. As you can see, the curl community is a literal community—it kinda takes a village to figure out hair textures, and these are just a few of the zillion resources available out there. Similar to the no-poo method, the Curly Girl Method is all about keeping it as natural as possible. The philosophy is simple, albeit somewhat overwhelming, especially for those who have been relaxing, straightening and treating their hair with chemical products for years and years. So, what else still holds true from the original handbook? Well, there’s reducing heat styling and opting to air dry, plus ‘plopping’ works (a technique using a cotton T-shirt or pillowcase to ‘plop’ sopping wet hair into a mound, avoiding damage caused by twisting up traditional towels) as does ‘scrunching out the crunch’ (applying gel to soaking wet hair, leaving to dry, then scrunching out the hardened product), which is ASMR-bliss, plus a super-fun way to experiment with spirals.

Anyways, ever since then, the texture of my hair changed. It was never curly but certainly a bit wavy. But I straightened it for the next 20 years because, well, I just assumed it was supposed to be straight.

Drying & Diffusing

This often means that, by the time people become aware of the Curly Girl Method, their hair is already so damaged, the transition from frizz to beauty can be rather awkward and demotivating – but it’s so, so worth it. Bend forward & blot dry by cupping curls in a towel – never wring or disturb your curls. Then air-dry. If you’re in a hurry, use a diffuser. If you want to make your curls pop, the products you use after you wash your hair are really important.
