BODY KOUROS by Yves Saint Laurent is a men's "Eau de Toilette" belonging to the Spicy Oriental family. It is a new addition to the KOUROS family, the brand's most emblematic saga for men, which on this occasion presents its most daring and modern facet. Tame performance and hollow middle stage keep it from reaching the yesteryear greatness. Young folk will find it more accessible, while perfume aficionados are probably praying that the next reformulation still retains what’s good in this one. Trends have changed, and people have switched to fresh and sweet offerings, but there is a big but here. If Chanel has managed to save Antaeus which also uses Civet as the main note, I have to wonder why L’Oreal skipped this opportunity to keep the old Kouros magnificent.

Saint Laurent passed away in 2008 due to brain cancer, but his legacy endures as a fashion pioneer who sought to make women feel both comfortable and elegant. Body Kouros StoryOne could philosophize about naming for a long time now. Why was Kouros chosen, why Body? One probably thought that under the well-known name Kouros the fragrance would sell better. Again, the modern public will probably like this, and in my opinion, there wasn’t a better time to try this classic than today. During the 1970s Ysl expanded to cosmetics, and due to the company’s profits decline, the company was sold to Sanofi in 1993.

I couldn't stop being amazed when I saw all the scents YSL had and has. Paris, Rive Gauche, Jazz, Opium, Kouros, those were all terms to me. But beyond that I was still quite ignorant. But that should change with the closer study of the extensive perfume database. And well, I somehow stayed with it ;P I don't wear it exclusively to it, but it's just my thing for such times. Laurent's career in fashion began at the tender age of 17, when he served as assistant to Christian Dior. With Dior's death four years later, Laurent was named head of the house of Dior at just 21 years of age. Still a young man when the Algerian War of Independence broke out, Laurent was drafted into the army in 1960 and lost his position at Dior. Military service and despair over the loss of his design position resulted in a hospital stay. In such cases, the distinct three-phase composition can become less discernible, giving the impression of a single nondescript note.

The composition is surprisingly modern and traditional, with the classic elements of aromatic fougère fragrances and a contemporary twist. In terms of seasons, it thrives during the colder months, but I have worn it even during warmer spring days, and it never became too much.
