About this deal

This piece was updated by Derek Rose, the coffee and tea expert for The Spruce Eats. He researches a variety of coffee products, from measuring scoops to commercial espresso machines, and interviews field experts for their insight.

If you are looking for a tumbler in which you can make a hot cup of coffee then simply throw it in your bag, there is a chance you could have a big spill to clean up. This is not a leak-proof lid and is simply ‘spill-proof’ which is important to know. It’s also advertised to be sweat and rust-resistant, which is cool if I happen to leave it in my car while I’m on a few days vacation… If you or the person you’re buying for already have a Hydro Flask water bottle, buying a matching tumbler for use around the house is a nice touch. They’re good looking tumblers, but they don’t perform any better than the other brands to justify the huge price difference. How we selected Our Lab team consists of testers with decades of experience in both professional and home kitchens. In addition to their testing, tumblers were sent out to our food and commerce writers who cook and meal prep consistently.

Analysis and Test Results

How well the tumblers prevent spills and leaks: We filled the tumblers to maximum capacity with room temperature water, sealed them, and laid them horizontally on top of a towel. Then, we inspected for leaks, noting where the leaks occurred and how much water was spilled. Renu Dhar, a personal chef, culinary instructor, and food blogger, tested the popular Stanley Quencher H2.0 FlowState Tumbler on multiple errands, road trips, and everyday journeys from her desk to the gym to her car. My tea stays hot for my entire commute home, which can sometimes be up to 2 hours if the traffic is bad or I get caught up. 6. Clear Instructions Provided With the Beast on How to Clean the Lid and Tumbler Itself

Without buying and trying out these tumblers, it’s easy to make assumptions about performance. “Maybe the steel is thinner,” you think. “Maybe the vacuum is actually less of a vacuum.” Our testing shows, though, that If there’s anything fancy that other brands are doing to improve theoretical insulation performance, the giant plastic lid is an equalizer that levels the playing field. It's hard to imagine any downsides to getting a Yeti tumbler at all. However, there are at least one or two things that you may want to be aware of before investing. The differences between these tumblers is so small that it would be impossible to tell them apart. The real difference is between the tumblers and the water bottle: because the vacuum-sandwich stainless steel walls provide the most effective insulation, the wide lid of a tumbler is a real liability. Even the fact that the Hydro Flask tumbler has no seal to keep steam in made only a tiny difference in the test. Additionally, because the quality is not as high, any liquids you put into your tumbler may not be able to maintain the desired temperature for the same period of time. You might find that your hot drinks become lukewarm sooner than they might in a Yeti. Plus, ice will melt a lot faster in a Beast. While some people may be willing to put up with this, others may find that they are willing to pay those extra few dollars to get better quality. What Do Beasts and Yetis Have in Common? Spout stoppers: Flip-up stoppers and slide-over stoppers are the two common approaches to keeping a tumbler closed. Look closely at what you’re buying, though: Many tumblers are made with a few different lid styles if you look for them.

Erika Owen is a big fan of super cold water. A simple water bottle doesn't pass the temperature test. She's been testing insulated tumblers for years and is constantly searching for the perfect travel-friendly option that doesn't eat up (too much) precious carry-on space. Vacuum-insulated cups, which are typically made of metal or glass, have both an inner and outer wall that is separated by a thin layer of vacuum. The outer walls have a reflective coating to keep heat inside the inner chambers; meanwhile, convention (how heat rises and cold sinks — causing the loss of heat) is prevented by the cup’s lid.

A solid tumbler with a classic cup shape and an ergonomic lid that works well, though it fails to stand out from the crowdConsider how you’re going to be using your tumbler. There are lighter options for hikers and campers, but they may not hold as much liquid or keep it as cold or hot. Going on a super-long road trip and need enough coffee to fuel you for a day straight? Go for something a bit larger that you may not be toting around very often. There are also plenty of minimal options for those who may have their insulated tumbler on display throughout the day (like in an open-plan office).
