About this deal

It’s one of two 4G home broadband devices available from the network at the time of writing, but with the other (the Huawei AI Cube) also being a smart speaker, this will likely be the default device for many buyers. Featuring the latest CAT13 4G Modem technology, the B535 router will provide one of the fastest 4G network connections, and deliver this to your office computers and servers via wired Ethernet connectivity or to your office wireless devices, laptops and tablets to share your high speed 4G connection. The 4GEE Home Router 2 meanwhile matches the Huawei B535 / Huawei HomeFi Plus for speed, and can connect up to 64 devices at once, but it has two (rather than four) ethernet ports. So again, it’s not quite as good as the B535. Unfortunately, neither the app nor the web interface offer the option of displaying detailed information about the Internet connection, such as the frequency band used, the antenna technology used or the CA status. There are also no such settings, for example to set the router to a specific frequency band. The LTE router models from AVM, for example the FRITZ! Box 6820 LTE offers significantly better equipment in this area. After all, there is the possibility to use “only 3G” or “only 4G”. The Huawei B535 does not support GSM / 2G anyway. There are a few main alternatives to the Huawei B535 WebBox. Assuming you’re specifically after a 4G router then there’s the Huawei AI Cube, which is also available on Three, the Vodafone GigaCube, and the 4GEE Home Router 2 on EE.

In terms of LTE speeds, the Huawei B535 was able to convince in the test. Although the device was tested in the test with unlimited SIM cards from Vodafone, it was far from the theoretical maximum, but with well over 150 Mbit/s in the downlink and up to 70 Mbit/s in the uplink, you can do a good life. We also take a comparison test with the Netgear Nighthawk M2 Router and it shows that the network theoretically enables even higher speeds. The latency was usually well below 30 milliseconds, and the peak was even less than 20 milliseconds. The reception and transmission power was very good in the test (LTE B3, B7, B20).

The B535 routers from Three, seem to work fine with Three and some other carriers but not all and not in a consistent way. I did have a B535-232, it worked fine on Three, Lyca & Lebara but for some reason it would not work with an iD mobile SIM, my B535-333 works fine with iD but only 3G with Lyca. Strangely, mine works fine with an EE SIM and shows a 4G+ connection (band aggregation?) but is on a later version of firmware. EDIT: Although I guess a free home line would be good if only for the odd occasion that you want to call British Gas (or similar), where you spend 20 mins listening to Einer kleiner Nacht musik before arguing for 10 minutes, comparing costs to PAYG voice charges. But there’s more than just speed here, asthe Huawei B535 supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi bands. This is another fairly standard thing in routers, but not always found in 4G ones, especially older models. Features and software The Huawei B535-333 is a fast, reliable 4G+ router from Huawei featuring two SMA-female antenna connections, for use with an external antenna. While it's not the fastest model Huawei offers, it is highly reliable and can achieve speeds as high as 400Mb/s. I have to say, it really depends on what your purpose is, these are basic routers built to a price for carriers. For me, on my 4Mbit ADSL, a 20MB 3G connection is quite an improvement. As such, you might want to consider the new Three 4G Hub or another network option instead, as it might not cost more overall, and in the case of the Three 4G Hub you’ll get higher speeds.
