The Book of Abramelin tells the story of an Egyptian mage named Abraham, or Abra-Melin, who taught a system of magic to Abraham of Worms, a Jew in Worms, Germany, [1] presumed to have lived from c. 1362– c. 1458. [ citation needed] The system of magic from this book regained popularity in the 19th and 20th centuries partly due to Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers' translation, The Book of the Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage. Makes you wonder if all of the famously bad reputation of Abramelin Working is down to the basic fact that people have been using incomplete magical squares !? And despite all of the bad-mouthing that AC directed at MacGregor M, he never appears to have doubted his occult scholarship... In previous posts we have explored the meaning and purpose of Lady Day within Traditional Witchcraft, being a birth, death, rebirth festival par excellence, as well as marking the commencement of the New Year. Significantly, the Abramelin Operation commences at the spring Equinox, aligning the themes and purpose perfectly well with the conception of the Christos and the increase in light, being at first a rite of fertility, later becoming one of vitality, concluding in inspiration. These three phases are highlighted deliberately as they are identified as the necessary purpose of magical ritual in the cache of Robert Cochrane letters (Monmouth, 2012), allegedly written by the ‘Old Man of Westmoreland’ (a mysterious figure who supposedly conveyed the essence of Witch lore an practice to Cochrane).

Ritual washing in the morning before sunrise, followed by a prayer for visitation from the Holy Guardian Angel, in a designated space with an open window and altar. Prayers are repeated after sunset. Maintain moderation in all activities, from food and drink to business and social affairs. Change the sheets and perfume the bed chamber on the eve of every Sabbath. Maintain purity, honesty and humility in all actions. Dress moderately, and always be willing to give to others. Second Phase Such dreadful examples are often related to initiates who, upon emotional impulse or under egoic influence, claim a supernal grade while officially only a Neophyte or a Zelator. Skipping the intervening grades (sephira) allows the lightning flash to descend upon an unprepared vehicle. There's a lot of wisdom involved in "climbing the ladder one rung at a time," making certain that every detail is properly equilibrated at one sephiroth before moving on to the next level. One must withdraw from society, focus on intense meditation and daily prayer, and refrain from practicing any other forms of magic for the 6 to 18-month period the operation requires. The process can be broken into three primary phases. In terms of crossing the Abyss, there are a couple of principles that seem to be generally unknown, or are otherwise often misunderstood: The text warns, however, that only those with good intention may successfully complete the operation. Modern commentators often describe the Abramelin Operation as a sort of prolonged contemplative retreat.

APPENDICES

The Abramelin Operation is a very intense and lengthy process with sets of rules one must follow the following description of the process has been oversimplified and condensed. If one wishes to perform this ritual at their own risk, obtaining a copy of The Book of Abramelin is recommended. Continue morning and evening prayers, but ritually cleanse your hands and face with pure water before entering the altar space. Prayers should be prolonged and intensified. The whole body should be washed every Sabbath eve.

During the 6 months one spends most of the day everyday in meditation and comtemplation, without distractions! There really is nothing like this :) During that 6 months, the crap that gets in the way of the connection between ourselves and our HGA is cleared out. The baggage and issues that we carry around is cleared out like never before. Also during the 6 months our energy and power is raised to such a degree that we are more fully able to unite with our HGA. Once this is accomplished, the magician must evoke the 12 Kings and Dukes of Hell (Lucifer, Satan, Leviathan, Belial, etc.) and bind them. Thereby, the magician gains command of them in his own mental universe, and removes their negative influence from his life. Further, these spirits must deliver a number of familiar spirits (four principal familiars, and several more associated with a set of magical word-square talismans provided in the Abramelin’s Book Four). On the 12th day he gets results: "Also I beheld my Lord in a figure and I felt the interior trembling kindle itself into a Kiss --- and I perceived the true Sacraments --- and I beheld in one moment all the mystic visions in one; and the Holy Graal appeared unto me, and many other inexpressible things were know of me. Also I was given to enjoy the subtle Presence of my Lord interiorly during the whole of this twelfth day. Then I besought the Lord that He would take me into His presence eternally even now."

All instructions of cleanliness and fairness from the first phase must remain, and ideally be strengthened in daily practice. A fast should be undertaken every Sabbath eve. A retreat from society should be made whenever possible, for as long as possible, during this phase. This incomplete translation is the most common English version in circulation today, though a new translation by scholar Georg Dehn from the original German manuscript was released in 2006.

One of the easiest ways for someone interested in learning more about spiritualism, mysticism, and the arcane is to read books described as “ cursed” throughout history. There are surprisingly many such books out there. Abramelin oil, also called Oil of Abramelin, is a ceremonial magic oil blended from aromatic plant materials. Its name came about due to its having been described in a medieval grimoire called The Book of Abramelin written by Abraham the Jew (presumed to have lived from c. 1362 – c. 1458). The recipe is adapted from the Jewish Holy anointing oil of the Tanakh, which is described in the Book of Exodus (30:22-25) attributed to Moses. He that riseth up against thee shall be thrown down, though thou raise not so much as thy little finger against him. And he that speaketh evil against thee shall be put to shame, though thy lips utter not the littlest syllable against him. And he that thinketh evil concerning thee shall be confounded in his thought, although in thy mind arise not the least thought of him. And they shall be brought unto subjection unto thee, and serve thee, though thou willest it not." - from THE CRY OF THE 1ST AETHYR, WHICH IS CALLED LIL - Liber 418. Scent: The oils of Mathers and Crowley have a different aroma from the Jewish Abramelin oil. The scent of galangal is gingery and spicy whereas calamus is florally sweet yet a bit yeasty—although the scent of the final oil is strongly cinnamon. For example, a square entitled "To walk underwater for as long as you want" contains the word MAIAM (מים), the Hebrew word for "water". A square for recovering treasures of jewelry begins with the word TIPHARAH (תפארה, a variant of Tiferet), which can mean "golden ring" in Hebrew and is also the name of the sphere of "Beauty" (which has the planetary attribution of the Sun) on the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. The German sources clearly list " Calmus" or " Kalmus". But, instead of calamus, Guth has translated these as "galanga root" ( galangal). Taking this into account, the five ingredients listed by Abraham of Worms in The Book of Abramelin are identical to those listed in the Bible. Only the proportions are slightly different (one-half versus one part of calamus). Loda, Maria Elena (2009). "La Magia Sacra di Abramelin". Misinta (31). There are several important differences between the original manuscripts and Mathers’ edition. First, one of the four books was missing entirely from the French manuscript with which he worked. Second, Mathers gave the duration of the operation as six months, whereas all other sources specify eighteen months. Third, possibly due to a mistranslation, Mathers changed one of the ingredients within the recipe for Abramelin oil, specifying galangal instead of the original herb calamus. The oil in the German manuscript sources also contains cassia and is nearly identical to the biblical recipe for Holy anointing oil. The differences between the recipes cause several notable changes in the oil’s characteristics, including edibility, fragrance, dermal sensation, and spiritual symbolism. Fourth, there are 242 word squares in Mathers’ translation, while the original German has 251. Most of the squares in Mathers are not completely filled in, and those that are differ markedly from the German sources. The first printed version, also in German, dates to 1725 and was printed in Cologne by Peter Hammer. [4] A partial copy in Hebrew is found in the Bodleian Library in Oxford, and dates from around 1740. [ms 5] An 18th century manuscript copy exists in French in the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal in Paris, an institution founded in 1757. [ms 6] Another 17th-century manuscript in Italian exists in the 'Legato Martinengo' of the Queriniana Library in Brescia, Italy. It was part of the collection of the Count and Qabbalist Leopardo Martinengo of Barco and Torre Pallavicina. The manuscript, unknown for centuries to international researchers until 2009, has been found by academic researcher Maria Elena Loda in the esoteric section. At the moment, it is the only known manuscript translation in the Italian language of the Abramelin grimoire. [5] [6] A German translation, credited to Abraham of Worms and edited by Georg Dehn, was published in 2001 by Edition Araki. In the Dehn version, the fourth book is included and Mathers’ galangal substitution is reverted to calamus (though not in the English translation — see Abramelin Oil). All 251 of the word squares are completely filled in. An English translation of Dehn’s edition was published 2006 by the American publisher Nicholas Hays. A) He who would accomplish the Great Work must climb the mountain twice, once by day (Magical) and once by night (mystical), and the second time he must bring someone with him. In Crowley's case, Victor Neuberg was dragged along. You’ll want to read the original text of the book in its entirety, particularly the sections on what should be considered before undertaking the process, and the ritual specifications for building an altar and other ceremonial objects.
