About this deal

Save a few minor details like the variable magnification adjustment slider near the right eyepiece, the overall body shape of this Discovery Gator is very typical to that of your typical compact porro prism binocular, which is mostly a good thing as I find this particular shape comfortable to hold in the hands when using the instrument. But other than these minor points, I would say that as you would expect of any Nikon product, they look pretty well made and considering that they have a plastic shell, they still feel fairly solid and robust and in terms of build quality are as good as any compact porro prisms found in this price range. At 20x power these are advertised as having an angle of view of 2.6° (45m @ 1000 meters / 135ft @ 1000 yards) which is very narrow and indeed it feels it when looking through them.

At the low 8x zoom setting, I did find that there was just enough eye-relief to use them whilst wearing glasses and get the full field of view. As you decrease the power, this widens to a maximum of 4.6° (80m @ 1000 meters / 240ft @ 1000 yards) at 8x power, which has to be said is pretty narrow if you compare them to an average 8x binocular. An inch (symbol: in) is a unit of length. It is defined as 1⁄12 of a foot, also is 1⁄36 of a yard. Though traditional standards for the exact length of an inch have varied, it is equal to exactly 25.4 mm. The inch is a popularly used customary unit of length in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Centimeters to inches formula and conversion factor

The centimeter (symbol: cm) is a unit of length in the metric system. It is also the base unit in the centimeter-gram-second system of units. The centimeter practical unit of length for many everyday measurements. A centimeter is equal to 0.01 (or 1E-2) meter. Definition of inch The slider is nice and smooth and is large enough to make even quite fine adjustments to the magnification straight forward. Strong Points: I think that on the whole their main feature, the 8-24x zoom works pretty well, which I have to be honest I was rather surprised about. Being able to zoom into something to view it in more detail is nice and the actual zoom adjustment dial is well positioned and it is really simple to adjust without having to remove the binoculars from your face, or even change your grip. In your hands the Nikon EagleViews feel good and I would say that they not only look good but also give off the impression that they are more expensive than they actually are. The image quality and brightness at 8x magnification is also pretty good for a pair of compacts. I also really think the Gator is a fun little compact binocular to play around with and thus another definite use could be as a set of binoculars for older children to use. Now usually I recommend get a low powered binocular for kids as it makes them much easier to use. But with a zoom binocular like these, they can start off at the low 8x setting and then zoom into objects which I know for certain most if not all kids will love!inches = centimeters / 2.54 Using our centimeters to inches converter you can get answers to questions like: Image shake dramatically increases at the higher magnification, which makes it very hard to view fine details, which in many ways can negate any advantage you get from viewing an object at a high magnification.

At no time did I detect any other obvious deformities in the view and once correctly focused was reasonably sharp and looked perfectly flat even at high magnifications, which in my experience, especially for a low cost zoom binocular is certainly not always the case. The lenses on these Nikon EagleView Zooms are multilayer-coated. What this means is that they have received multiple layers of anti-reflective coatings which helps to increase light transmission, for a brighter image and therefore better low light performance. This is good, but it would have been even better if they had been fully-multi coated, which would mean that they had multiple layers of anti-reflective coatings on all air to glass surfaces and not just some of them as these are. By opening and closing the central hinge, you can set the eyecups to match the distance between your eyes. On these, they go from a minimum of distance of 5.2cm apart, right up to 7.4cm. Whilst I would not expect a low cost binocular like these to have the same build quality as a top of the range pair that costs ten times as much, but I still want them to be tough enough to handle most normal bumps and scrapes and still want them to feel like you have a good quality optical instrument in your hands and not just a toy.Other than to say that the objectives have a 25mm diameter and that the oculars are just over 12mm in diameter, I can't really expand as no information is given. I do still have some reservations as to combining a compact instrument with small 25mm lenses and a powerful 20x magnification as it really does reduce their optimal operating window and they are never going to be able to offer you the image quality or brightness of a high powered fixed magnification binocular with large lenses.

AB, DD, IV, KW, PH, FK, FY, TR, PA, KA, LL, PO , SA, CA, DG, EH, EX, G, LD, ML, PL, SY, TA, TD AND TQ. It takes about 2½ turns of the wheel to go from maximum focus distance to the minimum. Thus I describe these as having a low geared focus mechanism. The advantage of this is that it makes fine focus adjustment easier, but on the flip side, it takes longer to make large focal adjustments than on those which take less turns. This is why I would suggest trying to mount any high power binocular onto a steady base like a tripod/monopod if you are going to use a magnification above 12x to 15x. Thus for me it is a shame that these binoculars are not easily tripod mountable using a standard binocular tripod adapter and thus to do so you will have to think a little outside the box and come up with your own plan or at the very least try and rest your elbows onto a steady surface like a table to minimize image shake. Another downside to them not being fully covered in rubber is that there is more chance of them making a louder sound if something like your watch or more commonly a ring on your finger strikes against them. Rubber armour dampens down the sound and helps to ensure that you don't frighten away easily spooked animals like birds or deer.Comparing a low cost binocular like these with other binoculars that are far more expensive may seem a little unfair at first, but as long as you keep in mind the price difference, it does throw up a few interesting points and can highlight a few of their relative strengths and weaknesses and show where some of your money goes if you choose a more expensive pair of binoculars. To see this in action, you can hold these binoculars up at arm's length and look at the eyepiece lenses, where you can clearly see the circle of light in the eyepieces, this represents the exit pupil. As you increase the magnification you can actually see this circle of light in each eyepiece getting smaller and smaller - see my series of photos below that I took to demonstrate this: The binoculars fit comfortably inside and are easy to take out and replace, but without being so loose that they flop about which is good. A wide FOV can be important. So for example if you often view fast moving and difficult to follow objects at close range like birds. As the simple eyecups are not really adjustable, there is not a lot you can do other than for them completely down or use them at the maximum setting.
