About this deal

Read more of Megan Miranda’s books! The Last to Vanish and Such a Quiet Place offer unique but similarly satisfying thrillers with a twist. Or maybe Ms. Miranda, who has also written several young adult books, is just more comfortable writing characters of a young(er) age? I dunno.

I know before even starting a Megan Miranda book that there is no way I will be disappointed. I have read them all. From All The Missing Girls to The Last To Vanish. I can rattle off moments in each one of her books from memory. I read quite often so remembering details isn't always my strong suit but Miranda has a way to make Amaya, like me, like most of the survivors, had moved away from town in the years after the accident. Though her choice of location now was unsettling. a b c d "A scientific approach to writing fiction". MIT News. Massachusetts Institute of Technology . Retrieved 2023-04-04.

I’d made a list. Made a plan. Justified it by reminding myself that these were not really my friends, and ten years was long enough.

I had fun reading this one. And although I only finished it a few days ago, I can barely remember the details. So it may not be that memorable of a read, but it is enjoyable in the moment. Thoughts: This book was so much deeper than I thought it would be. It was sad to read about the tragedy and all of the complex emotions that went along with it. The book switched from present time at their yearly retreat and each individual perspective the night of the accident. It was gripping from the beginning and became more claustrophobic as the story went on. Each character was interesting and unique and fun to read about. This was a very slow burn, too much for me honestly. I also don't like it when everyone knows something that the reader doesn't, and that made it more of a frustrating read than it needed to be. Couple this with a large cast of characters that aren't well defined made the book a chore to get through. Overall, there are a couple of good twists and surprises, so it's a decently successful read in the end.

I have to say, for a group of adults, they sure think and behave like teenagers. Did their emotional development get stunted at the time of the tragedy? Perhaps. My room—the room I had stayed in since that very first year—was one of three on the second floor. The door was open at the end of the hall, welcoming me. Inside, there were two queen beds with matching aqua-colored comforters, dark wooden furniture, and an antique, out-of-place mirror. Amaya’s luggage was at the foot of the bed that had always been hers, nearer the entrance.
