About this deal

Published in 1924 by the Bodley Head, The Man in the Brown Suit is Agatha Christie’s fourth novel. Unlike the classic murder mysteries that made her famous, The Man in the Brown Suit, like her second novel The Secret Adversary, is an international crime thriller. Content produced by or for Standard Ebooks L 3C is dedicated to the public domain via the CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication. Amateur Sleuth: Anne, thirsting for adventure, sets out herself to pursue the man in the brown suit, rather than share what she's found out with the police. A tourist visiting Cairo witnesses a murder and after that sees a man in a brown suit fleeing the scene. She boards a ship and assumes that one of her fellow passengers is the criminal and that they also plan to steal a cache of diamonds. However, all of her traveling companies appear to be potential suspects. [3] Cast [ edit ]

Anne and Harry fall in love. Harry tells her of the diamond discovery he and John Eardsley made years earlier. They were duped by a young woman called Anita Grünberg, who substituted their diamonds for ones stolen from De Beers. After being listed as missing in action, Harry disappeared, coming to Africa under the name of Harry Parker. The Man in the Brown Suit was released by HarperCollins as a graphic novel adaptation on July 16, 2007, December 3, 2007, adapted by "Hughot" and illustrated by "Bairi" ( ISBN 0-00-725062-2). This was translated from the edition first published in France by Emmanuel Proust éditions in 2005 under the title of L'Homme au complet marron. So as with all of the non Poirot/Marple books written by Agatha Christie, I hadn't read this before and had no knowledge of the plot. That said I was familiar with one of the main characters, the ex army, secret service man Colonel Race. Agatha Christie has written a most entertaining story, excellently conceived and executed." — Morning Post. [6] Nadina has double-crossed the Colonel, however, keeping some De Beers diamonds from a crime years before. What's hilarious is that throughout the movie the characters keep running into each other, like, Africa's the equivalent of some small town, you know, where bumping into one's neighbors is a sure bet.

Love at First Sight: Anne rescues Harry when he's stabbed on board the boat, and becomes so infatuated with him that she's willing to "walk across Africa" for his sake. Pretty, young Anne came to London looking for adventure. In fact, adventure comes looking for her—and finds her immediately at Hyde Park Corner tube station. Anne is present on the platform when a thin man, reeking of mothballs, loses his balance and is electrocuted on the rails. Extremely Protective Child: Anne's father is an absent-minded scientist, so it's her job not only to take care of the practical side of their lives, but also to make sure her father is properly dressed for bad weather. When she isn't there to keep an eye on him, he takes his coat and scarf off, and dies of pneumonia. It starts off with Anne Beddingfeld finding her life to be ever so dull, so she goes off to London to look for adventure. When she inadvertently stumbles onto something suspicious, she's thrilled. She immediately dives headfirst into its murky circumstances in the hopes it will bring her the excitement she so desperately craves. Here we have a similar story but set in 1988 and with a loud American, who seems to think everyone around her is deaf. Ann witnesses an accident and a man in a brown suit takes something from the body (not a roll of film as in the book). The actress playing Ann is awful, as is the script. The way she get close, very close to her fellow actors (Col Race when they first meet) could be seen as assault. She's too jaunty, too silly - ooh shall I go home or stay here? Oooh I'll stay here an have an adventure!!! This from a forty year old woman. Anne goes to the meeting with Harry and again bumps into Chichester, alias Miss Pettigrew. She is led to Sir Eustace, alias "the Colonel". Pedler forces Anne to write a note to Harry to lure him to the curio shop, which she does but she does not include their code in it. Harry turns up and Pedler is exultant – until Anne pulls out a pistol and they capture Pedler. Race turns up with reinforcements and Pedler tries to bluff matters out, but is unsuccessful. It is really a hard life. Men will not be nice to you if you are not good-looking, and women will not be nice to you if you are.

Nadina, a Russian dancer, receives a visit in her dressing room from Count Sergius Paulovitch. Both are in the service of a man they call "the Colonel", an international agent provocateur and criminal. After many years, "the Colonel" is retiring, leaving his agents high and dry.The Man in the Brown Suit is a work of detective fiction by Agatha Christie, first published in the UK by The Bodley Head on 22 August 1924 and in the US by Dodd, Mead and Company later in the same year. There she finds that Harry is wanted as the "Man in the Brown Suit" but has gone missing. Pedler offers Anne the role of his secretary on the train trip to Rhodesia, which she accepts at the last second, and is reunited with Race, Suzanne and Pedler who has a new secretary named Miss Pettigrew. The Secret of Chimneys - The Seven Dials Mystery - Cards on the Table - Murder is Easy - Towards Zero Almost a month later, Anne awakens in a hut on an island in the Zambezi with Harry Rayburn, who rescued her. He reveals that someone deliberately caused her to fall. Bond Villain Stupidity: Discussed Trope, as Anne notices how the villain in The Perils of Pamela never just kills Pamela the easy way, but rather sets her up to die in a "sewer gas chamber" or something of the sort, thus always allowing the hero to rescue her.

Karma Houdini: Sir Eustace, international crime kingpin, who strangled Nadina to death, who tried to murder Anne twice, escapes. At the end of the novel he's at large. Anne admits that as bad as he was she likes him and is pleased to hear that he got away. Anna believes that the person who examined the corpse in the subway was not a doctor, his actions were too unprofessional, but the police inspector did not listen to her. The description of his appearance to the inspector does not say anything, all this can be easily changed with the help of makeup. Anna draws attention to a detail that cannot be changed: the doctor has a brachycephalic head shape.American actress Zimbalist plays lead character Anne Beddingfield (an Englishwoman in the book, by the way) as a kind of tough, adventurous and resourceful heroine in a nod to the Indiana Jones series, and is ably supported by Suzy Blair, played by McClanahan (who doesn't seem to mind playing her Golden Girls character, Blanche - Or maybe she was forced at gunpoint to do just that??). Dutton plays man-on-the-run Harry Lucas, a handsome Brit who possesses not only some important information, but a secret hankering for some down-and-dirty time with foxy Anne. Woodward has a ball (and I do mean a ball) playing crook Sir Eustace Pedler, and Tony Randall amuses as the fumbling, bumbling, and mumbling Pedler henchman/chameleon. Two points of views. This kept the book fast paced and very misleading, although Pedler was extremely sexist and sarcastic - his diary entries were interesting to read, and he was a little hilariously pathetic at times. At 1.00am on the morning of the 22nd, a young man staggers into Anne's cabin having been stabbed. Anne is able to dress the man's slight wound but the man is not in the least bit grateful and leaves after an altercation with her.
